Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 joins Renault racing action at the 'Ring

Next weekend (August 30th - 31st, 2008), the famous Nurburgring will host a full weekend of Renault racing action with demonstrations of the ING Renault Formula 1 team and races of all Renault categories, from the impressive Formula Renault 3.5 World Series to the Clio Cup. Of course, the World Series by Renault weekend in Germany wouldn't be complete without the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0, that is coming to the Nurburgring for the 13th and 14th round of the 2008 season.

The "World Series by Renault" race meetings, introduced a few years ago, are an innovative concept that has proved to be successful, with crowds of over 100,000 spectators at some events. They can get in for free and get a lot to see and enjoy: not only a full package of spectacular action on the track, but also a variety of activities for the entire family in the paddock: Europe's largest mobile Ferris Wheel, a display of historic and modern Renault cars, a playzone for children, Formula 1 pit stop contest, race car simulators and a lot more. Highlights on the track include demonstration runs of the ING Renault Formula 1 team with the current Renault F1 RS 28 car. And the best thing: access, parking and a souvenir event programme are all for free! Tickets for the Nurburgring event can be obtained from the Renault dealer network in Germany.

For drivers and teams from the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0, the two rounds at the Nurburgring mark the series' third and final visit of the year to Germany, previously having raced at Hockenheim and Oschersleben already. It is the penultimate weekend of the season and the battle for the championship title is heating up. Valtteri Bottas, who won the first six races of the season and then scored another two wins at Assen, failed to score any points during the most recent weekend at Zolder and saw his Motopark Academy team-mates Antiono Felix da Costa and Tobias Hegewald close up in the points' standings. At Zolder, Hegewald scored his first win of the season on Sunday while Dutchman Stef Dusseldorp had taken the spoils for Van Amersfoort Racing on Saturday. Many drivers from the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 are on double duty as they will be racing in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 at the Nurburgring as well.

Formula Renault action at the Nurburgring will start on Friday with a free test session from 16.20 till 17.50 h. Qualifying in the usual format with two sessions of 20 minutes each deciding on the starting grid line-up for each of the two races is on Saturday from 13.05 till 13.55 h. Sunday is raceday at the Nurburgring with the first race starting at 9.10 and the second race at 16.30 h. Both races will be run over a duration of 25 minutes each. TV-footage can be watched on the Internet via raceworld.tv.

Q & A with Tobias Hegewald (Motopark Academy), who will be competing in both the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 at the Nurburgring

What has the season been like for you so far?

In the Eurocup, there is an upward trend as I have been able to improve all the time. In the Northern European Cup, it has not been running entirely as I had expected. Partly, that is down to myself as well. In Assen, I messed up in qualifying and at Zandvoort I spun while in the lead and I should have won the race.

You scored your first win of the season at Zolder. Was that a relief?

Yes, you definitely can say that. Like I said, that first victory had been due for quite a while and it was nice that it finally happened.

This weekend, you will be competing in both the Eurocup and the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0. This means that you will be driving four races. How difficult is that?

To be honest, not really. I am physically fit and the races are only about half an hour each, so that is no problem.

Will you also be watching the Formula Renault 3.5 and could that be a goal for next season?

I will definitely be watching the Formula Renault 3.5 and there are some contacts to teams, but I don't know yet where I will be racing this year. First of all, I want to finish this season and then we will see.

What do you expect from the Nurburgring weekend?

As it is my home event, I hope for a good result. In both the Eurocup and the Northern European Cup, a podium finish and maybe even a win should be within reach.
