Team KTR dominates fourth round of NEC at Oschersleben

Danish Mikkel Mac has scored two victories out of three Formula Renault 2.0 NEC races at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben this weekend. Leader in the current standings Ludwig Ghidi seemed to be sentenced to third place for the entire weekend, seeing his 34-point lead vaporize to just 17.

The Grosse Preis der Stadt Magdeburg held a premiere for the Northern European Cup with a programme of three races instead of the usual two. As if the challenge of an extra race was not enough, the extraordinary heat (37 degrees and over) made this weekend into a true survival of the fittest.

The Belgian team of Kurt Mollekens started off with a maximum result in qualifying and both drivers on first row for the first race on Saturday. Although MIkkel Mac should receive full credit for his win, man of the match was definitely Liroy Stuart, who managed to fight his way up from fifth to second place and secure his second podium place of the season.

The set up for the race on Saturday afternoon was made up by the second best qualification time of each driver. Jeroen Mul earned pole, both KTR drivers were again not far away. The second race of the day was the perfect opportunity for Mul to proof to himself and his team that he could stand the pressure. The number 13 for Van Amersfoort took this chance with both hands and scored full points. In second place was Rogier de Wit for KTR, who was very close to podium in earlier races but was now finally rewarded with a cup and valuable championship points.

Sunday afternoon 11th of July offered the final chance to the eighteen competitors of the Northern European Cup at Oschersleben. For the first time ever, the Formula Renault 2.0 and 2000 participants started the third race in a Northern European Cup event. The grid was formed by the result of race 1, meaning another pole for Mikkel Mac. Whilst the extreme heat was the biggest threat to the boys in front, Kai Boller, competing in the Formula Renault 2000 was the surprise of the day. He managed to race from 16th to 11th place overall, earning his first cup and a third place on the 2000 podium.

It was a very tough weekend to make a first appearance in the Northern European Cup, but Kevin Mirocha for SL Formula can be very proud of his achievements so far. He was very quick in the free practices, and scored 4th, 5th and 7th place in the races.

Teammate Di Martino in the 2009 version of the Formula Renault showed his team where he belongs and took his first podium on Saturday afternoon.

The event in Oschersleben has brought back the excitement to the fight for the standings in the Formula Renault 2000. Daniel Schilling has taken over first position from his brother Dear, and is now leading with just one point difference. Austrian talent Johann Ledermair, currently placed third, is only 4 points away from the first Schilling.

The fifth round of the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup will take place at the TT circuit Assen, during the Rizla Racing Day on the 7th and 8th of August 2010.
