FORMULA RENAULT UK RACERS END YEAR ON HIGH WITH WORLD SERIES BY RENAULT PRIZE TEST
Three top drivers from the Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship fulfilled their prize test in a Formula Renault 3.5 Series race car at a sun-soaked Motorland Aragon circuit on Wednesday, 20th October.
Formula Renault UK Champion Tom Blomqvist (Saffron Walden), Vice Champion Lewis Williamson (Golspie) and Will Stevens (Oxshott), each got behind the wheel of the 425hp machines as a reward for their performance in the one-make series this season.
Previous years have seen only the Formula Renault UK champion receive a prize test in the 3.5-litre car -- as seen at the World Series by Renault events -- but this year organisers were able to invite three drivers to test at the 3.321-mile circuit. Third-place finisher Tama's Pa'l Kiss (Hungarian) had been down to test but due to other commitments his seat was offered to the next highest placed driver, fourth place finisher Stevens.
Running with P1 Motorsport, Stevens produced the best time of the three British drivers -- and 10th fastest for the day -- although the Surrey racer had spent time testing the car earlier in the week. Blomqvist, who had never driven the car before, tested with the same team which led him to victory, Fortec Motorsport, posting a best time of 1min 44.054s and 12th quickest for the session.
Meanwhile, 20-year-old Williamson, who had also never tested before, ran with ISR finishing the day with a best time of 1min 44.036s and 17th fastest overall. Last week also saw Williamson impress behind the wheel of a GP3 car at Estoril in Portugal, topping the timesheets on the second and third day of testing despite being a rookie.
Blomqvist, Williamson and Pa'l Kiss will also shortly enjoy a test in a British Formula 3 car thanks to yet another new move by organisers.
Commenting after his test Blomqvist, who at 16 became the youngest ever winner of the title earlier this month, said: "The car is very impressive and certainly much more physical to drive than the Formula Renault UK cars. It was a steep learning curve but I enjoyed the experience and made the most of the time we had in the car."
Vice champion Williamson said: "The test went well today and allowed me chance to get a feel for the car and things like the brakes, speed and down force. We put in around 30 laps and towards the end we were producing some good times."
Stevens added: "I spent the day before testing with Epsilon before moving to P1. The car felt good and we weren't far off the top pace. I was really impressed with the down force of the car and my first choice for next year would be a full season of World Series. We'll just have to see how things work out though with regards to budget."
