Grand American and Homestead-Miami Officials Postpone Miami 250 Rolex Series Race One Week
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (September 6, 2004) -- Officials from the Grand American Road Racing Association and Homestead-Miami Speedway jointly announced today a one-week postponement of the Rolex Sports Car Series Miami 250 - originally scheduled to be run this weekend, Sept. 10 - 12 - in light of the recent and pending hurricane activity that has impacted and further threatens Florida and other regions of the Southeast.
Round 9 of the 2004 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series championship, the Miami 250 is now scheduled to take place at Homestead-Miami Speedway on the weekend of Sept. 17 - 19. The event weekend also includes Round 7 of the Grand-Am Cup Series that will be conducted on Saturday. Competitor move in will be on Thursday, Sept. 16.
Although Homestead-Miami Speedway sustained no major damage and remains safe and operational following this past weekend's onslaught of Hurricane Frances, the one-week delay will allow spectators and competitors to travel to the race in a more secure and safer environment. At the moment, damage to Florida's roads and interstates and related infrastructure is being assessed and available fuel for passenger cars and trucks is at a minimum.
The postponement decision was equally based on the current formation of Hurricane Ivan in the South Atlantic Ocean, another major storm that could make U.S. landfall as early as this weekend. Although the exact route of Hurricane Ivan cannot be determined at this time, all regions of Florida could be in the potential path of the storm.
"The postponement was the best decision to make at this time and we are grateful to Homestead-Miami Speedway President Curtis Gray and his staff for quickly working with us in taking this sensible course of action," said Grand American Road Racing Association President Roger Edmondson. "The safety of our fans and competitors alike is always our major concern and this brief delay will allow us to ensure a safe and successful event for all."
Additional information regarding the Miami 250 - including a rescheduled SPEED TV race broadcast air time - will be announced in the near future
