Skerlong takes win number eight to maintain title grip

Mukilteo, Washington (June 28, 2006) -- Carl Skerlong returned to victory lane last weekend, 24th-25th June, as he captured his eighth win of the season in Round 10 of the Formula TR Pro Series 2000 class, hosted at the 3.4-mile Reno-Fernley Raceway in Nevada. His triumph on Sunday followed his ninth straight podium finish the day before, Carl settling for third having been punted off and denied a guaranteed win with two turns remaining.

The 17-year-old reigning Formula TR 1600 Champion headed into last weekend's double-header following a month long lay-off between the previous rounds at Miller Motorsports Park. On that occasion Carl saw his superb run of victories, which totaled seven, came to an end as Dominic Scheer claimed the checkered flag in Round 8. Skerlong responded straight off the back of the trailer in Nevada and duly claimed pole position for Saturday's 10-lap race, Round 9, with a lap time of 1m58.499s.

With the weekend's races offering double-points Carl was looking good for a maximum haul behind the wheel of the #14 Odyssey Motorsports entry as he dominated the first race at the Reno-Fernley Raceway. Just two corners from victory Skerlong fell victim to a questionable passing maneuver from Knudsen Racing's Dominic Scheer. The pair clashed and Carl's car was pitched into a spin while Scheer was left facing in the right direction and promptly got going again to snatch the victory over his team-owner John Knudsen. Carl quickly recovered to claim the third and final podium spot but he was left to rue what was a certain victory.

Round 10 brought a change of fortune for the Washington-native as he went on to collect his eighth win of the season. Beaten to pole position in the morning by Scheer, Skerlong shadowed his rival in the opening stages of the 13-lap race and he was there to capitalize on an off-track excursion by the under-pressure Scheer. Once in the lead Carl never looked back and he went on to take the win ahead of Scheer and John Knudsen in third.

Reflecting on his Nevada successes Carl commented:

"Not a bad weekend all things considered although I should be leaving with two wins but Dominic's last lap pass put paid to that on Saturday. It was a questionable move and it cost me a win. I bounced back on Sunday though. I made a clean start and made the most of Scheer's early error. It remained close after that but I held on for the win."

Rounds 11 and 12 of the Formula TR 2000 Series are hosted at the California Speedway in Fontana, 15th-16th July -- www.formulatr.com
