Kenney Suffers Fontana Frustrations

Sterling, Virginia (March 21, 2007) -- Liam Kenney's hopes of a more positive return to the California Speedway for Rounds 3 and 4 of the 2007 Formula TR Pro Series 2000 Championship last weekend, 17th -- 18th March, were dashed as another eventful double-header meeting left the 15-year-old racer frustrated in Fontana.

Having wracked up a DNF and a fourth place finish at the season-opener at the California track the previous weekend, Kenney, graduating from the Formula TR 1600 Championship to the 2000 Championship this season, was hoping to build on his series debut and was looking strong with a fourth place qualifying effort on Saturday. His flying lap of 1m38.036s in the #95 Liam Kenney Motorsports entry placed him on the second row of the grid set to take the fight to Round 1 and 2 victors John Knudsen and Billy Goshen on the front row.

Round 3 saw Liam in the thick of the action but his efforts would be cut short a handful of laps from the checkered as a rear suspension collapse under braking into Turn 5 dropped the back end of the car, Kenney losing his steering in the process. Liam was forced onto the sidelines and duly had to watch pole-sitter John Knudsen take his second win of the season followed at the flag by Billy Goshen and Luis Martinez Jr.

Starting fourth again for Sunday's 13-lap sprint round the 2.8-mile road course at Fontana, Liam was reveling in a much improved race car, his team having worked hard to repair Saturday's damage. Unfortunately the teenager's run of bad luck continued when a punctured tire at Turn 10 pitched him off-track and into the barriers to force a second straight retirement from the weekend. Series leader John Knudsen triumphed again with Luis Martinez Jr. pacing Billy Goshen to the runner up spot.

"Well this definitely wasn't the weekend we were expecting," reflected Kenney after Sunday's retirement. "We learned a lot more about the set-up of the car this time round and we proved on Sunday that the car could be competitive as we were running strong in the race before the accident. We're still on a massive learning curve so while we didn't necessarily get the results we'd have wanted we're continuing to educate ourselves and that'll undoubtedly help us next time out in the car. Roll on Willow Springs!"
