CHAMPIONSHIP LEADER METCALFE FASTEST AT THRUXTON
Jeremy Metcalfe, Formula Renault UK Championship leader, began his weekend on home soil in perfect style during official testing at Thruxton today -- the Fleet sensation setting the quickest time of all ahead of rounds five and six of the season.
The Hampshire 18-year-oldenters tomorrow's two qualifying sessions aiming to not only extend his lead in the driver standings and continue his superbly consistent start to the year, but to also claim his first race victory of 2006.
During today's pair of 45-minute test sessions at the 2.35-mile circuit, the AKA Lemac ace certainly boosted his hopes of visiting the top step of the podium for the first time this season by posting the fastest time of all, a lap of 1m 10.542 seconds (120.23mph) in glorious dry and bright conditions.
"I'm very pleased with the way testing went for us today", said the series leader, "It's fantastic to start the weekend with the fastest time in testing but tomorrow is where it will really count during qualifying.
"The car is working very well and the team had a great set-up here last year, taking both pole positions and a win, so I'm hopeful we can do the same again. Things have started well and it would be brilliant if I could win my first race of the season on my home track.
"I like Thruxton, it's a great circuit, and I think we can be confident ahead of qualifying tomorrow with the pace we've shown today. It's terrific to be leading the championship but it's a very long season so we need to make sure we score heavily this weekend to maintain our position. I'm confident we can though and I'm aiming to win both races."
Round five qualifying is scheduled to take place at 10.20 tomorrow, Saturday, 3rd June, with the grid for round six to be determined during a second qualifying session at 14.40.
On raceday, Sunday, 4th June, round five is expected to start at 13.00 and round six will get underway at approximately 16.35. Both events will be covered live on Motors TV, channel 413 of the Sky Digital platform and via cable provider NTL on channel 173.
In further news, Jeremy will be profiled in the Formula Renault UK slot of the weekend's official raceday programme. The feature will also be accompanied by an advertisement from his key sponsor, BillChaser.
