BIRD SECURES FIRST FORMULA RENAULT WIN
In treacherous conditions at Knockhill in Scotland today, Sam Bird (Claygate, Surrey) enjoyed a lights to flag lead in this weekend's second race in the highly competitive Formula Renault UK with Michelin Championship.
Having excelled in free practice on Friday, finishing top of the table, Sam also qualified well, to start race one in third slot and race two on pole.
Race one saw a poor start from the Surrey-based driver, sending him back to 6th, from a 3rd place start. "I didn't get away cleanly" said Bird after the race "but I had the pace and would have been charging to regain the lost places. However, a spin in front of me sent me into the gravel -- I managed to keep going, but had damaged my front wing."
The race was red-flagged soon afterwards and Bird was able to enter the pits for repairs on his car, re-starting the race from 17th slot. Although he was up to 12th by the end of the first lap, another incident brought out the safety car and the remainder of the race was run under safety conditions, meaning no overtaking. "A most disappointing race" commented Sam, "with only two laps of actual racing. I am confident that I could have gained quite a few more places had the safety car not stayed out until the final lap"
Race Two was again run in pouring rain, with Sam on pole position. He got a good start this time, increasing his lead each lap, until he was r running some 5 seconds ahead (of Cheng in second place) after only eight laps, when again the red flag came out. The officials decided that conditions were not conducive to continuing, so the result was declared, with Sam the winner.
"I am thrilled at securing my first Formula Renault win" he said "but it would have been so much better had we been able to run the whole race"
"The Fortec team has excelled itself, with all four cars at the sharp end of qualifying and racing this weekend, and all thanks are due to the team managers, engineers and mechanics"
Sam has now jumped to 6th overall in the championship and top rookie.
