Paul Di Resta dominated qualifying in difficult conditions for round five at Silverstone circuit. The Manor Motorsport driver led the queue of cars onto the circuit and used his position at the front to avoid the spray and traffic and consistantly lap faster than the rest of the field. There were various incidents further down as many drivers struggled in the conditions.
James Jakes qualified in a surprise second place for his best ever grid result with Alex Storckenfeldt behind him in third place. Championship leader Mike Conway could only manage seventh with his rival Westley Barber down in tenth place after the pair battled for second place through much of the session before fading away as other drivers put in their fastest laps towards the end.
Cheng Cong Fu had a dramatic start to the session when he spun through a full 360 degrees ahead of the rest of the field as the cars approached the line for their first lap. This caused those behind him to back off and immediately handed a gap to Di Resta who drove off into the distance.
Matt Russell and Stuart Hall both had quick spins at the exit of Brooklands but were able to rejoin. Charles Hollings was not so lucky however as he ran wide at the entrance to Luffield and became embedded in the gravel trap for the remainder of the session. He was also joined in retirement by Joey Foster, currently third in the championship, who spun off the circuit under braking for Brooklands and stopped in the gravel.
Russell spun for a second time at Brooklands towards the end of the session but unfortunately stalled his car and was not able to rejoin the session. Pippa Mann spun at the exit of Luffield onto the grass on the infield but was able to rejoin, although she eventually qualified in last place over twelve seconds behind pole position. Patrick Hogan, Rodolfo Gonzalez, Juan Polar, David Epton, Mike Conway and Sean Edwards also had incidents around the circuit.
Di Resta could have claimed pole position with only his sixth lap but the British driver, who survived a minor spin early in the session, stayed out on the circuit and improved his time a further four times to an eventual 1m 30.732s and finish 1.277s seconds ahead of his nearest challenger.
