McIntosh shines through Scottish downpour

Knockhill, Scotland (August 28, 2005) -- Scotland's finest rain failed to dampen Sean McIntosh's title aspirations today as the Canadian racer stormed to a brace of victories in Rounds 13 and 14 of the 2005 Formula Renault UK Championship at Knockhill Circuit, Fife.

The inclement weather conditions, a feature of the Scottish track, proved no obstacle for Sean as he collected wins number four and five of the season, the Vancouver-native firmly on a roll having locked out the top step of the podium in four straight races thanks to today's triumphs and his earlier 'double' at Snetterton.

In the chase for the championship Sean jumps to second overall sitting just nine points behind current series leader, Britain's Oliver Jarvis, with six races remaining.

Sean's trip north of the border started as it would continue with the Team Firstair charger setting the pace in Friday testing. He duly turned his testing form into solid qualifying results come Saturday's on-track action, capturing his third consecutive pole position for Round 13 and a second fastest effort for Round 14.

While the rain had threatened throughout qualifying yesterday the ominous clouds finally unleashed their content as today's racing kicked off. Sean's first victory, in Round 13, was another lights-to-flag affair. Leading from pole, the 20-year-old made the most of a clear-track ahead as his rivals battled behind with each other and the spray from the circuit.

Yelmer Buurman ensured Sean wouldn't have an easy run to the checkered as he shadowed the Canadian from second for the duration of the 24-lap sprint round the tight, twisty and now very slippery 1.298-mile Knockhill Circuit. Buurman's constant attention led to a brief coming together on the penultimate lap but Sean held his own to take the win, crossing the line 0.1s ahead of the Fortec Motorsport challenger.

Round 14 this afternoon allowed Sean a more relaxed run in the rain as he beat pole sitter Patrick Hogan off the line. He once again seized the chance to run at the front and by the end of the first lap he was a second ahead of his pursuers. Enjoying a clear view he set about increasing his lead before a brief safety car period eradicated his advantage.

Unfazed, when the safety car peeled back into the pits Sean simply got back down to business and rebuilt a comfortable lead at the head of the pack.

Sean's efforts were rewarded with his fourth successive trip to the top of the podium and another welcome dose of 32 points to add to his title-fighting points fund.

Reflecting on a wet but ultimately very successful weekend in Scotland Sean commented:

"It's been an awesome day! I didn't have much experience of racing in the wet before coming to the U.K. to race last season. It's good to show that I'm capable of winning races regardless of the track conditions, which today at Knockhill were extremely slippery!

"To win four races in a row is great but there's still plenty of racing ahead to decide this year's title. There are three or four of us fighting for the championship and you can't afford to have a bad weekend as the competition is so strong. It's important for us to keep qualifying on the front-row and our recent victories are testament to that!"

Oliver Jarvis leads the points standings on 329 with Sean passing James Jakes for second place, the Canadian racking up 320 to Jake's 310.

The 2005 Formula Renault UK Championship heads back down south to Donington Park, scene of Sean's first win of the year, for Rounds 15 and 16 on September 11th.
