SUPERB START TO THE SEASON FOR BRATT AND SCORPIO
Formula Renault UK star Will Bratt made a stunning start to his 2006 championship challenge at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit today by producing his best ever performance in qualifying -- missing out on a maiden pole position by little more than a 10th of a second.
Thriving in the familiar surroundings of the Scorpio Motorsport team, which is backed this season by Apotex Pharmaceuticals, 17-year-old Will was delighted to achieve eighth position on the grid for round one during the first qualifying session of the season, but that would merely prove to be the start of great things.
Having set a best lap time of 44.560 seconds (99.06mph) during round one qualifying, the Adderbury sensation and the Scorpio team agreed to make a couple of minor changes to the car prior to the afternoon's second session and it soon became clear it was the correct decision.
While looking very quick during the morning, Will was even closer to the outright pace in the afternoon qualifying period. He ended the 20-minute session with the fifth fastest time of 44.636 seconds (98.89mph) to secure a fantastic third row grid start for Sunday's second race.
Furthermore, he was just 0.163 seconds away from his first ever Formula Renault UK pole position, proof of not only the competitiveness of the country's premier one-make single-seater championship but also of the major strides forward Will and Loughborough-based Scorpio have made during the winter.
Commenting on his personal best qualifying performance, Will said: "I'm really happy with our pace today and while I was delighted to be on the fourth row for the first race of the year, to have gone fifth fastest in the second qualifying session was fantastic - especially as we were so close to the pole position time.
"The car feels really good and the performance we delivered today is the kind of pace we know we're capable of. The team has worked very hard over the winter and we're confident we'll certainly be able to hold our own during the races tomorrow. It's been a great start to the season so far, I hope it continues that way on Sunday."
For Scorpio Motorsport, Will's qualifying performance only goes to underline the team's credentials as it bids to cement its rightful place among the category front-runners and the year has undoubtedly begun in the best possible way.
Tony Trevor, Scorpio's technical manager, added: "We're absolutely delighted with how things went today, Will drove superbly well and we're very happy with our set-up. To be just over a 10th of a second away from pole position is fantastic and we know that kind of difference is certainly achievable."
