FIRST FORMULA RENAULT PODIUM FOR LEWIS WILLIAMSON
He almost did it in the second race of the season at Brands Hatch but yesterday at Donington Park, CRS Racing's Lewis Williamson took his first Formula Renault podium finish. The two races on Donington's National track were held in difficult, changeable weather conditions but Lewis, from Golspie in Scotland, drove well and came through to claim his prize.
After the qualifying session for race one Lewis lined up in 14th place and would have a hard race ahead of him if he was going to score points. He kept his focus though and put in a strong performance that took him to a seventh place finish. For race two his chances were better as he had qualified much higher up the grid, in fifth place. He had an impressive start, despite the wet track, and immediately moved right up to second place. After a brief safety car period, Lewis was battling with the race leader, Formula Renault veteran Dean Smith. Experience won out though and Lewis, a Formula Renault rookie, was passed by James Calado. He held onto third until the flag, defending well and taking his first podium of the year.
Josh Scott didn't have quite the weekend he wanted. He got away well in race one, moving up a few places from 10th on the grid and finished the race in eighth place. Race two didn't go quite so well and fourth place on the grid didn't deliver the podium finish he hoped for as he again finished in eighth.
Harry Tincknell had a bit of a controversial race one. He started from eighth and soon got involved in a battle with Jordan Oakes. He raced well and finished sixth but his manoeuvre on the other driver was judged to have been overzealous and he was excluded from the race result. To make matters worse Harry had only qualified in 19th place for race two as the changing conditions caught out a lot of drivers. He got stuck in though, finished the race cleanly in 12th place and remains at the top of the table in the Graduate Cup.
Matias Laine struggled to 17th in the first qualifying session but took a solid seventh place in the second. When the races got underway he took a top ten finish in race one but only 17th in race two. Michael Lyons had a difficult weekend as his qualifying positions of 24th and 23rd left him with tough races where he could only finish 22nd and 23rd. His A Level exams will be over soon though and he will be able to fully focus on his racing.
"Donington was always going be one of the hardest races for CRS this season," said Team Director Andrew Kirkaldy. "With all the changes going on at Donington it's a circuit we have not had the chance to test on. This is especially hard when four of your drivers are rookies. I think over the course of the weekend they all went well in some very difficult conditions. Lewis did a great job to finish on the podium, considering he only set eyes on Doningon for the first time on Thursday morning."
