FIRST ORDERS RECEIVED FOR NEW FORMULA RENAULT 2.0 RACE CAR
More than 20 orders for the New Formula Renault 2.0 race car, which will make its competitive debut at the start of the 2010 season, have already been received by Renault Sport UK.
Current UK teams Fortec Motorsport, Manor Competition, CRS Racing, Mark Burdett Motorsport and Hitech Junior are among those to have registered their commitment to the new car which features a new aerodynamic setup, seven-speed sequential gearbox and a 2.0-litre, 16v normally-aspirated engine.
Orders have also been received from outside the current Formula Renault paddock including Clio Cup front-runners Team Pyro and leading Formula Renault BARC team Antel Motorsport.
Antel Motorsport Team Manager Brett Parris, who currently drives in the BARC series but will pilot one of the new cars in 2010, said: "We've been working on a move into Formula Renault UK for a while but it made sense to time it with the launch of the new car as it will provide a level playing field for all teams. We intend to run three to four cars in BARC and two cars in UK and we're confident we can get our cars running near the top in both."
Interest in the new car has also been received from former Formula Renault UK Team Manager Ian Barnwell (Team Firstair and Position 1) who is rejoining the series which is regarded as the country's leading single-seater championship, launching the Formula One careers of Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen and Heikki Kovalainen.
Ian Barnwell commented: "I was really impressed with the new car when I saw it at Silverstone earlier this year and it was one of the reasons which prompted us returning to the series. It's been nearly ten years since the current car was implemented so now is the right time for an all new one, not just a new bodykit. The car's technical advances, such as the seven-speed sequential gearbox, will also put drivers in good stead as they progress to other championships."
The new cars are being built at the Renaultsport factory in Dieppe, France, with the first deliveries expected before the end of November.
