KNOCKHILL DEBUT AWAITS HYLKEMA THIS WEEKEND
Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship racer Thomas Hylkema faces a brand new test this weekend, 4th/5th September, when he makes his first outing at the undulating Knockhill Circuit in Scotland for rounds 15 and 16 of the season.
The 1.27-mile track, which is set in the middle of picturesque Fife countryside close to the landmark Forth Road Bridge, welcomes Formula Renault UK back this year for the first time since 2005 and so the pre-event test day on Friday, 3rd September, will be 22-year-old Thomas' maiden experience.
Currently 11th overall in the driver standings, just six points shy of the top 10, the Club Car, TORO and Geothex supported driver had a mixed weekend at Silverstone last time out. Forced out of a season best fifth place during the first of the event's trio of races, the Dutchman hit back strongly during the 14th round with an excellent top six drive from 13th on the grid.
Thomas, who resides in Delft in The Netherlands, is greatly looking forward to his first visit to the home of Scottish motorsport and the unique challenge which Knockhill provides -- blind crests, the daunting SEAT Curves (historically known as Duffus Dip) and the all-important Real Radio Hairpin which is probably the most likely overtaking point in a Formula Renault single-seater.
"I'm really looking forward to the weekend at Knockhill, the track looks quite different to anything else I've experienced in terms of the height differences and the blind corners but I think it will suit me", said the Manor Competition driver.
"I definitely feel confident ahead of the weekend, last time at Silverstone we had good pace in the final race and had a good finish so I think we can be on for the top six again at Knockhill. We need to make sure qualifying will be good as, from what I've seen, I don't think the overtaking opportunities will be big -- we'll see though!"
With a total of six races remaining in the 2010 campaign, there are still plenty of championship points to be contested so the top eight in the driver standings remains a realistic target for Thomas to aim for.
Pre-event practice at Knockhill will be held on Friday, 3rd September, with qualifying for rounds 15 and 16 taking place on Saturday, 4th September, at 10.25 and 16.00 respectively. Both Formula Renault UK races will follow on Sunday, 5th September, at 09.40 and 15.30.
