PA'L KISS CONTINUES TO SET THE PACE DURING IN-SEASON TESTING AT CROFT
Atech GP's Tama's Pa'l Kiss gave his title bid a further boost by setting the fastest time during official testing in the 2010 Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship at Croft circuit on Tuesday, 11th May.
The 18-year-old Hungarian racer, who currently leads the drivers' standings, posted a best time of 1min 15.470s (101.36mph average) around the North Yorkshire track -- more than half a second faster than his nearest rival.
That spot belonged to Manor Competition's Lewis Williamson (Golspie, Scotland) who went second quickest for the day with CRS Racing's Harry Tincknell (Exeter) third fastest with both drivers lapping in the low 1min 16s.
The sun shone for the start of the morning session in which CRS Racing's Michael Lyons (Essex) was the surprise pace-setter for the session with a time of 1min 16.865s (99.52mph average) around the 2.1250-mile circuit which is the venue for rounds nine and 10 of the series. The 19-year-old just caught his tyres at the right time before light rain began to fall as the chequered flag went out to end the first session. Fortec Motorsport's Ollie Millroy (Claygate) went second quickest for the morning stint with two the only drivers to break into the 1min 16s.
Williamson and Tincknell also posted strong times before the lunch break as did CRS Racing's Robert Foster-Jones (Southend on Sea) and Graduate Cup driver Alex Lynn (Dunmow) in his Fortec Motorsport run car.
Despite a brief shower during the interval, the drivers were greeted with a dry track for the start of the afternoon session. Kiss looked strong from the start and with a fresh set of tyres on set the best time of the day on his penultimate lap of 31 run and be the only driver to dip into the 1min 15s -- 1.407s quicker than last year's pole time for the circuit.
Williamson and Tincknell also set their fastest times during the session with Manor Competition's Will Stevens (Oxshott) and Atech GP's Nick Yelloly (Solihull) rounding off the top five.
Lynn, who had looked quick all day, finished sixth fastest and the leading Graduate Cup driver while David McDonald (Ewell) ended the day seventh this time running with Fortec Motorsport.
The test session also saw cars from the Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship join the Formula Renault UK competitors running without restrictors. SWB Motorsport's Luke Wright (Dorset) went quickest for the morning session with Hillspeed's James Theodore (Telford) recording the fastest time overall with a 1min 18.218s (97.80mph average).
Commenting on his performance Pa'l Kiss, who celebrates his 19th birthday next week, said: "I'm really pleased with the time but also a little surprised. We were aiming for low 1min 16s and didn't think we'd dip below that. The new tyres seemed to do the trick together with a great set up on the car."
Rounds seven and eight of the 2010 Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship take place at Oulton Park on 5th/6th June while the next two rounds (five and six) of the 2010 Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship take place at Croft on 3rd/4th July.
