BUZAID AND OAKES SHARE SILVERSTONE POLES

Fortec Motorsport's Adriano Buzaid (Oxford) scored his fifth Michelin pole position of the season in qualifying for round 17 of the 2008 Formula Renault UK with Michelin Championship at Silverstone National circuit. Eurotek Motorsport's Jordan Oakes (Hopton) later celebrated a maiden pole position in the series as he clinched pole for round 18 in a dramatic second session on Saturday, 30th August.

After dominating at Silverstone earlier in the season when the Grand Prix circuit was used at World Series by Renault, Buzaid continued his love affair with the Northants track by claiming pole with a time of 53.991s (109.28mph). Given the relatively short lap of 1.64 miles, the Brazilian's advantage of 0.179s was surprisingly large ahead of CR Scuderia Formula Renault's championship leader Adam Christodoulou (Lichfield).

Fortec Motorsport duo James Calado (Cropthorne) and Oli Webb (Knutsford) make up the second row and are the leading Graduate Cup competitors. The fourth Fortec driver Riki Christodoulou (Sutton Coldfield) is fifth to cap a near-perfect session for the Daventry squad.

Manor Competion's Alexander Sims (Peterborough), the main title challenger to Adam Christodoulou completes the top six. In his first outing for Alpine Motorsport, Rossi (Blackburn) out-qualified his new team-mate Dean Stoneman (Southampton) in seventh and eighth, with Oakes and Manor's Kris Loane, within 0.462s of pole position, rounding out the top 10.

Commenting on his pole position, Adriano Buzaid said: "The car felt great two laps before my best and I knew I could keep pushing the limit further until I reached 53.9s. I treat the National circuit and the GP circuit we did before completely separately but both have the same result this morning, which is perfect. I want to get another win if I can and end the season well."

In the afternoon session, which was much warmer and saw slower times, Oakes claimed his first pole position since round eight of the 2006 Formula Renault BARC Championship with a lap of 54.886s (107.50mph). In one of the closest sessions of the season, a mere 0.055s covered the top four places with Adam Christodoulou, Buzaid and Sims filling the front two rows of the grid.

Stoneman was the leading Graduate Cup driver in fifth ahead of Loane with Riki Christodoulou and Rossi on row four. CR Scuderia's Ryuji Yamamoto (Milton Keynes) and Apotex Scorpio Motorsport's Kieren Clark rose from 15th and 14th respectively in session one to reach the top 10.

Commenting after the session, Jordan Oakes said: "Obviously it's great to get my first pole in Formula Renault UK but in a strange way I know it could have been better because my time on the following lap was quicker until I reached some traffic. We've had several frustrating problems this year and we knew it would be tough as a one-car team but this is a good reward. I've heard it will rain tomorrow so that would be ideal for me starting from pole!"

Round 17 is scheduled for 09.30 on Sunday, 31st August with round 18 following at 15.15.
