MECHANICAL GLITCH RESTRICTS BRATT'S PACE AT ROCKINGHAM
Apotex Scorpio Motorsport's Will Bratt faced another frustrating outing at Rockingham Motor Speedway today during day two of official Formula Renault UK testing at the Northamptonshire circuit, the 18-year-old's pace blunted by a rare mechanical glitch.
The Adderbury 18-year-old was 10th fastest during the first of today's three sessions with a time of 1m 16.882 seconds (91.262mph) but a problem with one of his car's shock absorbers, which didn't become apparent until midway through the second session, meant Will was unable to make any real improvements before the end of the test.
His best lap of the day on the 1.95-mile International Supersports layout, 1m 16.806 seconds (91.352mph), did come during the second session but the mechanical problem with the car effectively ruled out any chance of Will lapping faster before the end of the day's action.
"We had hoped to make some inroads today and be consistently in the top five or six but during the afternoon we identified a problem with one of the shock absorbers which clearly had a big impact on our lap times", explained Will.
"We did use some different shocks from the team's second car but it was so late in the test by then, our front tyres were well past their best so we couldn't properly gauge the difference that would have made. I'm sure, had our tyres been fresher, we would have been significantly higher on the timings in the last session."
Although not as fruitful as either Will or Loughborough-based Scorpio would have liked, the Rockingham test still provided useful running and offered the first opportunity to test the new-for-2007 aerodynamic kit.
Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk hosts the next official outing of the pre-season with two days of exclusive Formula Renault UK testing scheduled for this coming Wednesday and Thursday, 7th/8th March.
Will added: "It's been a frustrating couple of days at Rockingham but, having said that, it's better these problems surface during testing rather than in the middle of a race weekend. I'm looking forward to making amends at Snetterton next week though, we should be more competitive there and back where we belong near the top of the times."
