The holidays are over and the Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup drivers will resume battle on the Valencia circuit in the south of Spain. Current leader, Albert Costa, will be racing on home turf and he will do everything in his power to widen the gap between himself and his pursuers led by Jean-Eric Vergne (SG Formula) and Nathanael Berhon (Epsilon Euskadi). They are closely followed by Miki Monras (SG Formula) who is ready to pounce on any slip-ups by the leading pair.
The last round of the Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup was on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in June, where victories went to Nathanael Berthon and Albert Costa. Since then, the drivers have been waiting impatiently to do battle again. The championship will restart this weekend on the very beautiful Valencia circuit where the FR 2.0 WECs raced last year.
Albert Costa is not yet in calculating mode. The man from Barcelona, who has scored 5 victories and 5 pole positions, still has to go for it if he wants to win the title. He is 19 points in front of Jean-Eric Vergne, and twenty ahead of Nathanael Berthon so he could nurse his lead, but this is not in keeping with the Spaniard's temperament for whom victory is all that counts.
But Vergne doesn't see things that way, all the more so as the battle between the Frenchman and Costa in the Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup is a kind of general rehearsal for the title fight in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. A week before going to the Nurburgring for the second last round of the World Series by Renault, both drivers want to put down a marker, and they are ready and all fired up for the final showdown!
Berthon who is lying third overall will probably take the lead in the French FFSA Formula Renault 2.0 title chase as the 2 races in Valencia will be the last in this championship. He he will be out to increase his 19-point lead over reigning champion Verge, who is 19 points in arrears and is still in with a chance of winning the title for the second time. Benjamin Lariche (Pole Services) is no longer in the running for the crown, but can finish in the first three in the French Championship.
All the Spanish drivers will be out to shine on home turf. As well as Costa, Miki Monras is also a serious victory contender. He has finished second once and third twice so he is determined to score his first victory in the Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup. He has got only 4 races left to break his duck, two in Valencia and two on the Portimao circuit. Miguel Otegui (Epsilon Euskadi) and Marcelo Conchado (Amiter Galuppo Sport) will be aiming for their first podium finish of the season.
And then there are the rookies. SG Formula drivers Arthur Pic and Hugo Valente both have what it takes to win. Pic has already been on the podium and is now aiming for the top most stop. Valente is still learning the ropes and is closing the gap to the front-runners. During collective testing, kart driver Norman Nato will have his first outing in Formula Renault 2.0 but he will probably not race.
After Valencia, the final of the Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup will take place in Portugal at the beginning of November on the Portimao circuit in the Algarve, in what already looks like the Great Formula 2.0 Winter Cup!
