Bowles Wins in NASCAR Debut at Miller Motorsports Park
TOOELE VALLEY, UTAH (July 14, 2007) -- Two rookies stole the show at Miller Motorsports Park on Saturday, with Jason Bowles scoring his first career win as the NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series made its inaugural visit to the state-of-the-art road course for the Big O Tires 150.
Bowles, of Ontario, Calif., won the 41-lap event by 3.510 seconds over fellow rookie Alex Haase of Las Vegas, who registered his best career finish.
Bowles, who started third, raced into the lead on lap 30.
"I don't know that I expected to win my first race in my rookie year," Bowles said. "When we unloaded on Friday, the car was really good right out of the trailer. We just all kind of had a feeling that it might be our weekend."
With his victory, Bowles secured a spot in this year's NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown. The prestigious post-season event will be held at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway on Oct. 19-20.
Brian Ickler, who had won the last two West Series races, moved into second with six laps to go and ran 1.5 seconds faster on lap 35. Bowles responded with the fastest lap of the race, and a lap later Ickler slid off the course and lost several spots. He wound up sixth.
"My crew chief said he was about a second a lap faster, so he said, "See you if you can pick it up a little bit,'" Bowles said. "And I did."
Series veteran Mike David of Modesto, Calif., finished third, his sixth podium finish in 10 races, to extend his lead in the championship standings.
Completing the top five were Johnny Borneman and long-time series veteran Scott Gaylord, who led 10 laps midway through the race in his return to the series after an eight-race absence.
David leads the series standings with 1,548 points, followed by Borneman with 1,434. Mike Duncan, who encountered mechanical trouble and finished 14th, slipped to third in the standings with 1,418 points.
In the Pacific F2000 Championship, Patrick Barrett of Los Osos, Calif., had the best weekend, coming home first in Friday's race, then backing it up with a second-place finish in Saturday's race. Thomas Merrill of Salinas, Calif., won Saturday's race after finishing third on Friday.
The Formula TR Pro Series featured some very impressive youngsters, as 16-year-old Bill Goshen of Brea, Calif., took the checkered flag ahead of 15-year-old Liam Kenney of Sterling, Va., in the 2.0-liter cars, while 15-year-old Sergio Pena of Catharpin, Va., was the top finisher in the 1.6-liter class.
KFAN 1320-AM radio personality Jim Cooksey came from third on the grid to take the win in the "Magic of Miller" Celebrity Race, in which the drivers all pilot Mustang Challenge race cars built at Miller Motorsports Park, ahead of X-Games freestyle motocross star Andy Bell and Olympic four-man bobsled bronze medalist Mike Kohn.
In the Ken Garff Porsche Invitational, Bill Dawson of San Diego was victorious in the GT1 class driving a Porsche 911 Twin Turbo, while John Potter of Salt Lake City took the GT2 class honors in a Porsche 964 Carrera 2 and Carl Buckland, also of Salt Lake City, finished on top in the GT3 class at the wheel of his Porsche 911 Carrera.
The next event at Miller Motorsports Park will be the Zions Bank Heroes of Speed presented by the Grand and Little America Hotels, featuring Historic Sportscar Racing, Ltd., over the weekend of Aug. 3-5.
