Two out of two for Bergmeister - Luhr and Maassen take up the chase @By Harald Bloche - Motorsport.com
Stuttgart/Barcelona. Two rounds, two green light to chequered flag victories for one of this year+s youngest Porsche-Pirelli-Supercup competitors, Jorg Bergmeister from Germany. Over the whole 14 lap sprint distance, the 25-year-old came under intense fire from Lucas Luhr and Sascha Maassen, both of whom had missed the first Supercup round in Imola due to their ALMS commitments. Former UPS-Porsche junior Luhr ploughed his way up from sixth on the grid to take second, with Maassen giving his Supercup new-comer team - Software AG, run by Carlin Motorsport - its first podium finish.
Motorcycle ace and double world motorbike vice-champion Ralf Waldmann delighted the Spanish fans with his performance. The much-loved motorbike hero put up an impressive fight, starting from 16th to bring home a top ten finish.
Jorg Bergmeister (D, winner): "This victory was much harder than in Imola. I came under huge pressure over the whole distance, first from Sascha and then from Lucas. At one stage Lucas and I were so late in braking at the end of the finish straight that I was sure we'd both fly off into the gravel. I couldn't have withstood the pressure for even one lap more - my tyres were finished... and frankly so was I."
Lucas Luhr (D, second). "At the start I had too much wheelspin, so Kelleners and Mathai were able to whip past me. I knew that the first lap was always mayhem so I kept my nose clean and avoided any trouble. From the second lap I noticed my tyres were perfect so I attacked."
Sascha Maassen (D, third): "That was a great fight. At one time all three of us ran wide on some radiator fluid left on the track by Michele Neugarten. From this moment on my car didn't handle all that well in the fast corners. I could have done with another 100 laps like in the ALMS."
Philipp Peter (A, fifth): "I'm very happy with this result and it fulfills my expectations totally. Although I've been racing for many years, the Supercup throws new and very tough challenges at me. But I'm learning and to be honest I'm dreaming of a podium finish at my home round two weeks from now in Austria."
Ralf Waldmann (D, tenth): "What a race! My start wasn't so good with way too much wheelspin, and then I backed off in the fight for the first corner and fell back to second to last place. Then I slid off the track after hitting radiator fluid, and my car went completely sideways through the gravel. At that point I had nothing to lose so I put my foot down and had a ball."
Race Results: 1. J. Bergmeister (D, Infineon Farnbacher), 14 laps in 26:32.550 mins. (=149,404 kph); 2. L Luhr (D, Carsport Racing), 0,694 seconds behind; 3. S. Maassen (B, Software AG Racing), 1,279; 4. R. Kelleners (D, PZ Rhein-Oberberg), 6,232; 5. P. Peter (A, Infineon Team Farnbacher), 17,026; 6. W. Henzler (D, Manthey Racing), 17, 945; 7. M. Werner (D, Infineon Farnbacher), 22,060; 8. V. Radermecker (B, Software AG Racing), 31,031; 10. O. Mathai (D, Manthey Racing), 32,136; 10. R. Waldmann (MC, Porsche AG), 33,305; 11. S. Kosutic (CRO, Kadach Tuning), 35,362; 12. J. Hunter (GB, Martin Flitton Racing), 42,136; 13. B. Camino (E, Porsche AG), 67,622
