Alex Job Racing Mckenna Porsche Battle to Third Place Finish in Spain; Second Straight Podium in European Lemans Series
JARAMA, Spain -- May 20, 2001 -- After 2 hours and 45 minutes of all-out racing, the #22 Alex Job Racing McKenna Porsche 911 GT3 RS was less than 10 seconds behind and closing in on the faster second place #42 BMW M3 GTR V8 of J.J. Lehto and Joerg Mueller. Co driven by Randy Pobst and Emmanuel Collard, the #22 came up just short on time in the final stint and Collard had to settle for a third place finish.
The #23 Alex Job Racing McKenna Porsche wasn't so fortunate. Just as the first hour of the race was up, Sascha Maassen was forced off the track by J.J. Lehto in the #42 BMW. "I had the inside position on him and was almost by him when he just moved over in to me," said Maassen. The damage was a broken valve stem on the left rear wheel, which caused a mini-explosion as all of the air left the tire.
The misfortunes for the #23 continued, however. After working its way back into third position, the right front lower control arm broke, resulting in a 20-minute pit stop. Lucas Luhr finished the race, bringing the car home to a eighth place GT class finish.
An interesting sideline to the GT race was the new found fuel efficiency of the V8 BMW's. "Just five weeks ago in England, the BMWs could barely go one hour on a tank of fuel, and today they went one hour and 26 minutes," commented team owner Alex Job. "Em manuel did a great job staying with close to the two BMW V8s near the end of the event, but just couldn't catch the more powerful rivals."
"They are obviously running to our pace, which is how they were able to do the whole race on just one stop," said a disappointed Pobst. "Whether they turned down the wick to save fuel, or found the solution on a computer chip, their combination of speed and fuel economy did us in today," added Job.
Next up for the Alex Job Racing McKenna Porsches is a return trip to the United States. The matching race cars need to be prepped for the hectic months ahead. Once the cars leave the shop for the July 22nd American Le Mans Series race at Sears Point in California, they don't return until after the September 9th race at Laguna Seca, four races later.
Now in its 13th year of competition, Alex Job Racing (AJR) is one of the premier independent Porsche teams in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). Based in a brand new 16,000 sq. ft. facility in Tavares, Florida, AJR entries have tallied three victories in the 12 Hours of Sebring, one win in the 24 Hours of Daytona, ten ALMS wins and captured the 1999 ALMS GT Driver and Manufacturer Championships.
