FORMULA FORD ZETEC CHAMPIONSHIP
Round 11, Donington Park
Sunday 30th July
Starting from pole position, Anthony Davidson made it three wins in four races in the Formula Ford Zetec Championship after a hard-fought victory at Donington Park on Sunday, 30th July. He lead every lap of the race, except one, in his BIC sponsored Haywood Racing Mygale and closes in on second place in the championship, now lying just 5 points behind Mark Taylor after dropped scores.
A good start saw Anthony go unchallenged into the first corner and lead the first three laps. At the end of lap 4, championship leader James Courtney (AUS) snatched first place in his works Van Diemen. It was to be the only lap that Anthony was to be headed.
At the end of lap 5, Anthony followed Courtney through the Melbourne hairpin and Mark Taylor attacked on the outside, getting ahead of Anthony on the exit. Entering Goddards, the next corner, Anthony out-braked Taylor but slid into Courtney pushing him wide. As they crossed the line Anthony was back in the lead and Taylor was up to 2nd place.
On lap 6 Taylor drove past Anthony on the straight and tried to squeeze Anthony out at the chicane. Anthony was late on the brakes, locked up slightly and slid into Taylor making slight contact with his championship rival's side pod and maintained his lead.
Courtney moved into 2nd, followed by his teammate, Robert Dahlgren (SWE), with Taylor back in 4th place. Anthony completed the race with the two Van Diemen's tucked in his slipstream but unable to pass. The three cars crossed the line separated by less than one second.
"This was my toughest win," said Anthony afterwards. "I had to work hard to keep everyone behind me throughout the race and especially in the early laps. After lap 6 I felt more comfortable and confident that I would win and sensed that Courtney was not going to take a big risk to try to take the lead."
The next round of the championship will be at Brands Hatch at the end of August. Anthony was fastest in official testing at the Kent circuit and should be well placed to further close the gap to Mark Taylor and 2nd place in the championship with three rounds remaining.
