Taws shakes down Barbie car.

Toronto, Ontario, (April 29, 2002): Eighteen-year-old race driver, Ashley Taws, rolled her "Be Anything With Barbie" Formula Ford car on to a race track for the first time April 25-28. Using a regional race at Mosport International Raceway near Bowmanville, Ontario, for a warm up, she deftly guided her highly visible pink race car to victory on Saturday, but went home disappointed on Sunday when snow caused the event to be cancelled.

Taws, who will compete in the Canadian Formula Ford Championship this season with a car fielded by AIM Autosport, looked comfortable as she settled in with the car during practice on Friday. The Newmarket, Ontario, resident showed no signs of nervousness in driving a car packing nearly double the power of the Formula 1200 she raced for the past two years. She enthusiastically blasted through Mosport's formidable corners, looking mighty as she plunged through the daunting second and fourth turns, carrying massive speed.

"It's sweet!" Taws said of her car. "Lots of power, great brakes, crisp handling. You can really hang it out with this car and it's amazing to feel it dancing about on the limit. I've got some learning to do and the team is helping me with the things I have to do differently from last year, but it went well. I can't wait for the first championship race."

Cold weather persisted throughout the weekend, with ice crystals often blowing about the paddock. Both track surface and tires remained cold and slippery, but until Sunday's snow, the weather did nothing more than keep hot chocolate machines busy and force people to bundle up.

"It was disappointing not to race on Sunday, but at least I had lots of time in the car on Friday and Saturday," Taws said. "This was just a test weekend for us, so we can get set for the start of the championship next month, but it was nice to win on Saturday."

When the 2002 Canadian Formula Ford Championship gets underway May 17th at Mosport, conditions will certainly be warmer and Taws will be able to push even harder. She is, no doubt, counting the days.
