BOC GASES AUSTRALIAN SUPER TOURING CHAMPIONSHIP - ROUND 5 LAKESIDE, QUEENSLAND: Race Report, Sunday, June 28

JONES WINS & TAKES LEAD IN CHAMPIONSHIP

McConville excluded after incident with Richards

Works Audi driver Brad Jones ended a series of disappointing results at Queensland's Lakeside circuit by winning both 25-lap races in the fifth round of the BOC Gases Australian Super Touring Championship on Sunday (June 28).

However, his Audi Sport Australia team-mate Cameron McConville was excluded from the results of the second race after an incident with multiple Bathurst 1000 champion Jim Richards on the final lap. There was contact between the pair, and Richards' Volvo Dealer Team S40 spun off the track. Richards was able to resume driving and completed the event in fourth place. McConville, who finished second to Jones, lost 12 championship points after his exclusion, while Richards gained two points after being promoted to third.

Jones, who had recorded just one win from his previous 10 championship starts at Lakeside, moved from equal first to outright leader in this year's series with his two victories. He leads the championship with 125 points, followed by Richards on 117, McConville on 99, and Independents Cup leader Cameron McLean of Queensland on 78. Jones' results also ended a seven-race winning streak at Lakeside by rival German manufacturer BMW.

In the opening race Jones led from start to finish and took the chequered flag in 22-mins 13.95-secs, finishing 0.63-secs clear of McConville, who was followed by Richards and McLean. Jones and McConville dominated the opening phase of the second race, until both were passed by McLean who led for eight laps and appeared on target to record his first championship race win. However, McLean was penalised for passing McConville under 'Yellow Flag' conditions and was required to drive through pit lane at 60km/h. He was relegated to fourth place by the penalty. In the closing stages little separated Jones, Richards, and McConville in the top three places, until the incident on the final lap. Richard set a race lap record of 52.23-secs, which was 0.27-secs inside the previous mark set by New Zealand's Craig Baird in a BMW in 1997.

There was also controversy in the Independents Cup, with Toyota Camry driver Ron Searle excluded from race two for failing to exercise proper care after contact with the Grid Motorsport BMW 318 of fellow-Sydney racer Anthony Robson. The incident resulted in Robson crashing and being forced out of the race because of damage to the front of his car. McLean retained the Independents Cup lead with an improved score of 130 points, and is followed by NSW's Mark Adderton on 104. Adderton was fifth in the two races in a BOC Gases Honda Accord.

The sixth round of the championship is at the Mallala circuit near Adelaide on July 19.

DRIVER QUOTES:

JIM RICHARDS (Volvo Dealer Team S40): "I've never been so annoyed in a long time. I felt Cameron (McConville) was wrong to put me off on the last lap. We'd been racing for 24 laps and there were plenty of times I could have done it to him, but I didn't. He's a good young driver - I'm okay now and I'll talk to him. You put these things behind you. We all get in a few skirmishes every now and then, but he forgot to put the brake on. These things shouldn't happen."

CAMERON McCONVILLE (Audi Sport Australia A4): "I'd prefer not to comment."

BRAD JONES (Audi Sport Australia A4): "I've got the Lakeside 'monkey' off my back. I was starting to wonder if I'd ever win another race here - I've been caught up in some big shunts, I've had engines let go, and all kinds of drama over the years. After all that it's great to win twice in one day. The car never missed a beat all day. We made some changes between races and the car was fast and strong."

CAMERON McLEAN (Greenfield Mowers Racing BMW 320): "I'd hoped to win here. Unfortunately I stalled on the grid in the first race so it was all over. I had to play catch-up and once I got up to fourth the three cars in front of me were too far down the road. In the second race the car was perfect, and once I hit the front I thought it was going to be my day. Then I got the message about passing under the yellow flag so it was disappointing."
