BOC GASES AUSTRALIAN SUPER TOURING CHAMPIONSHIP - ROUND 6 MALLALA, SOUTH AUSTRALIA: Race Report, Sunday, July 19 JONES & McCONVILLE WIN AT MALLALA Brad Jones extended his lead in the BOC Gases Australian Super Touring Championship when he and works Audi team-mate Cameron McConville dominated the sixth round of this year's series at Mallala near Adelaide on Sunday (July 19). Jones, who won the championship title for the first time in 1996, won the opening race at Mallala over 16 laps ahead of McConville in their Audi Sport Australia A4 quattros. The second race over 31 laps produced another one-two Audi result with McConville taking the chequered flag and Jones second. Championship contender Jim Richards lost ground to Jones in their battle for the title when he finished fourth in both races at Mallala in his Volvo Dealer Team S40. Jones, who held an eight-point lead over Richards after five rounds of the championship, scored 28 points at Mallala and extended his overall advantage to 20. The 38-year-old Albury driver now has a championship points tally of 153, with Richards on 133. McConville, who also scored 28 points at Mallala, is third in the championship with 127 points, followed by Queenslander Cameron McLean on 98. McLean, the Independents Cup leader, was third in both races at Mallala in a Greenfield Mowers Racing BMW 320. In the first race Jones led from start to finish. He completed the event in 19-mins 3.62-secs, finishing 0.11-secs clear of McConville, who was followed by McLean and Richards. NSW driver Peter Hills finished fifth in a Knight Racing Ford Mondeo, his best race result since entering the championship in 1994. Phoenix Motorsport Toyota Camry driver Ron Searle was forced to retire after spinning off the track on lap four. The second race, originally scheduled for 31 laps, was stopped after Hunter Holden Nissan Primera driver Adam Kaplan of NSW spun off after an incident on the first corner. The event was stopped, and then restarted. McConville led until he made his compulsory pit-stop to change two wheels. After the leading drivers made their pit-stops Jones led until lap 27 when passed by McConville who went on to win in 35-mins 56.35-secs. He finished 0.64-secs clear of Jones, who was followed by McLean, Richards, and Hills. Veteran NSW driver Bob Tweedie completed his 50th race start in the championship in eighth position in a Vauxhall Cavalier. Tweedie had been sixth in the first race, equalling his career-best result in the championship. The works Audi team has now won the past six championship races at Mallala since 1996. The final two rounds of the 1998 championship are at Winton on August 9 and at Oran Park on August 30. DRIVER QUOTES: BRAD JONES (Audi Sport Australia A4): "A few days ago I was lying on my back in the hotel feeling terrible with a virus, so I'm happy with a win and a second. The start was crucial in the first race. I got off the line quickly, and so did Cameron (McConville), and he gave me some room otherwise we might have touched. In the second race I made my pit stop early so my tyres were a bit "spent" at the end. It's good to make the points gap bigger on Jim (Richards), but the championship isn't over yet." CAMERON McCONVILLE (Audi Sport Australia A4): "The Audis always seem strong at this track, and today was no exception. Brad (Jones) and I were even in speed in the first race. We had a good battle in the second race, swapping the lead. I managed to get by coming onto the start-finish straight when he went wide and got on the "marbles". I had thought I was out of the championship, but after these results there's still a chance I can win it." JIM RICHARDS (Volvo Dealer Team S40): "Obviously things didn't go as well as planned and we lost ground to the Brad (Jones) and the Audis in the championship. Our preparation wasn't helped by the late arrival of a new engine from Britain, but we can't use that as the only excuse. We'll keep doing our best, and who knows - maybe the Audis will have some problems in the last couple of races." CAMERON McLEAN (Greenfield Mowers Racing BMW 320): "Being on the podium in both races isn't such a bad day. I didn't get the car off the line in the first race and the Audis raced away with it. I was able to get the Volvo under brakes at the end of the back straight. That was a good move!" PETER HILLS (Knight Racing Ford Mondeo): "I'm stoked. We're now running a strong third in the Independents Cup and I couldn't ask for any more. My team works long hours for no money - we're in motorsport for enjoyment. These results make everyone feel the effort is worthwhile." RESULTS - RACE 1 (16 Laps): POS DRIVER CAR TIME 1. B. Jones (NSW) Audi Sport Australia A4 19:03.62 2. C.
