McLEAN & SCOTT FOR BMW BATHURST 1000 BID
Volvo works team tests in Britain for 'The Great Race'
THURSDAY, AUGUST 13: Newly-crowned BOC Gases Australian Super Touring Championship Independents Cup winner Cameron McLean announced today he would team up with fellow-Queenslander Tony Scott in this year's AMP Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama on October 4.
They will share the Greenfield Mowers Racing BMW 320 which McLean is driving in this year's Australian championship. The car was driven in 'The Great Race' in 1997 by BMW Motorsport pair Paul Morris and Craig Baird, who finished first, but were disqualified after Baird exceeded the 3-hrs 30-mins continuous driving limit.
Scott has raced in the Bathurst 1000 four times since 1991, with a best result of sixth in 1995 in a Holden Commodore with former British Touring Car Champion John Cleland. Scott's past Super Touring experience includes driving a works Volvo Estate in the 1995 Australian championship. The 41-year-old from Brisbane also drove a Volvo 850 in the final round of the 1997 Australian championship at Sydney's Amaroo Park.
McLean claimed the Independents Cup title in this year's Australian championship at Winton Raceway in Victoria last Sunday (August 9). The 30-year-old Brisbane driver has nine top-three podium finishes from the 14 races in the previous seven rounds. As well as claiming the Independents Cup, he holds fourth position outright in the championship behind works Audi pair Brad Jones and Cameron McConville, and Volvo's Jim Richards.
"This is a terrific opportunity to do well at Bathurst," said Scott. "Cameron (McLean) is driving well, it's a good team, and based on the '97 results at Bathurst the BMW will be competitive and reliable. I'll get plenty of 'test miles' to become familiar with the car. I've raced at Bathurst before so that will help me."
AMP BATHURST 1000 BRIEFS
British-based works Volvo drivers RICKARD RYDELL, from Sweden, and Italian GIANNI MORBIDELLI have completed an endurance test at the Snetterton circuit in Norfolk to prepare for the Swedish manufacturer's expected assault on Bathurst. The test was reportedly a success, although Morbidelli was prevented from driving a third stint because of 45-degree cockpit temperatures. Rydell and Morbidelli will be in action this Sunday in the British Touring Car Championship round at Knockhill. Rydell leads the BTCC with 186 points, while Morbidelli is eighth on 54. In 1997 Rydell and JIM RICHARDS finished fourth at Bathurst in a works Volvo 850. Volvo are yet to announce their drivers for this year's race.
Audi Sport Australia team manager KIM JONES said 80-litre fuel tanks would be fitted to the team's two A4 quattros for Bathurst. The cars driven by BRAD JONES and CAMERON McCONVILLE in the sprint races in this year's Australian championship carry three fuel tanks with a maximum capacity of 60-litres. These will be replaced by a single 80-litre tank in the rear of the car for Bathurst. The team's other two drivers for Bathurst, apart from Jones and McConville, will not be announced until after the final round of the Australian championship at Oran Park on August 30.
Newcastle's TROY SEARLE will be joined by younger brother LUKE SEARLE in the Roadchill Express BMW 318 at Bathurst. Troy Searle, 23, made his Super Touring debut at Bathurst in the BMW in 1997 with NSW's Geoff Full and they completed 115 of the 161 laps before retiring because of an engine failure. Team manager David Searle said the car would have a new engine for Bathurst this year. Luke Searle, 22, has raced a BMW in this year's Century Batteries Australian GT Production Championship, and will make his Super Touring race debut at Bathurst. Troy Searle is in his first Australian championship season and is ninth outright and also ninth in the Independents Cup.
Brisbane's DAVID AUGER will drive his Gun Racing Alfa Romeo at Bathurst for a second successive year with Gladstone's LAURIE KYTE. The pair were 12th in 1997 after losing 18-minutes in a pit-stop to repair a broken alternator.
Sydney's RON SEARLE will race at Bathurst in the Phoenix Motorsport Toyota Camry with triple national rally champion NEAL BATES. Searle is 10th in the Australian championship. Bates drove the car with NSW's MARK ADDERTON in 'The Great Race' in 1997. Adderton will race a Honda Accord at Bathurst this year, but his team-mate is yet to be finalised.
Canberra's MARK ZONNEVELD, who made his championship debut at Winton in a Knight Racing Ford Mondeo, has been included in the team's driver line-up for Bathurst. He will race with Queensland's KURT KRATZMANN, who drove for the team in the Lakeside round . Knight Racing lead driver PETER HILLS said he had not decided on his team-mate.
