BROCK LEGEND CONTINUES AT BATHURST

Victorian James Brock today wrote a new chapter in the Bathurst motor racing book of legends by winning his first race on the famous Mount Panorama circuit in pouring rain.

The 23-year-old son of nine-times Bathurst 1000 champion Peter Brock took the chequered flag in the inaugural race for the new Bathurst Tourers V8 category in a Biante Model Cars Holden Commodore. Brock completed the 38-lap event in 2-hrs 12-mins 55.22-secs, finishing 4.34-secs clear of second-placed Jason Wylie of Victoria in a Commodore. Victorian duo Ray Sidebottom and Andrew McInnes were third in an Australian Petroleum Supplies Commodore.

The race began in wet weather and Brock established a 28-secs lead in the opening 17 laps before his first pit-stop. He received a stop-go penalty after his crew assisted him re-start after the pit-stop, which relegated him to eighth. Brock charged through the field and reclaimed the lead on lap 32. Moments later the race went under Pace Car conditions because of heavy rain and fog across Mount Panorama. The race was completed with all vehicles circulating behind the Pace Car for the remaining laps.

Brock only began racing in 1999. His victory at the Bob Jane T-Marts Bathurst ‘99 meeting was witnessed by parents Peter and Bev Brock. Peter Brock retired from racing in 1997.

QUOTES

JAMES BROCK (Biante Model Cars Holden Commodore): “This is the first time I’ve raced at Bathurst so I didn’t know what to think when I woke up this morning and saw the rain falling. I thought there was no point in pussy-footing around when the race started and I was able to open a gap. The Pace Cars worked out even - I lost my lead with the first one, but the second one allowed me to get back with the leaders. To win my first race at Bathurst is just unbelievable.”

JASON WYLIE (Jason Wylie Racing Holden Commodore): “The conditions were terrible - I could hardly see through the windscreen at times. I wanted to have a go at James (Brock) in the last few laps, but the pace car stayed out. At the same time when it’s wet the main aim is to finish so second is still a pretty good result.”

PETER BROCK (father of James Brock): “I guess I’m a little biased, but I couldn’t fault the way James (Brock) drive out there. It was a remarkable performance considering the conditions and his inexperience. He’s showing a lot of maturity and I’m sure he’s going to get better with more races.”
