All Eyes On Top Regional Drivers In 2001 Afos!
Final preparation for the first Asian Festival of Speed (AFOS) event of the season is on schedule and the teams have begun testing their cars on the picturesque 2.4km Subic International Raceway.
AFOS will again witness top racing drivers competing in the FIA-sanctioned Asian Touring Car Championship (ATCC) and Asian Formula 2000 (AF2000). With confirmed participants from around the world especially from Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Macau, India, and Indonesia, AFOS look set to be a truly international race meet.
Drivers are already settling in and preparing their machines for their 2001 campaign in both ATCC and AF2000, however at this early stage of the season some are still struggling to find the correct set up for their new cars on this bumpy circuit.
The temperature of 340 C in Subic has started to take its toll on several drivers who are competing for their first time in AFOS. Sunny weather throughout the day with 66% humidity gave participants ample opportunity to try out the tyre performance of Michelin on cars like Alfa Romeos, Peugeots, Toyota Altezza, Hondas and Asian Formula 2000.
Leading contenders in AF2000 are the four Indian hopefuls Karun Chandhok, Narain Sathyanarayanan, Asif Nazir, Kaushek Haritha in SMR Team India. Denis Lian of EZ Import Racing showed signs of potential podium finishing which is benefited from his brief AF2000 participation last year.
Local support races have also received good response for this weekend's AFOS season opener. Among the races are SVI Challenge Cup, Blaze Super Saloon, Miata Cup and Production Car Championship.
The season opener will be on 6th-8th April in Subic Bay, Philippines and has attracted many local supporting races. 2001 AFOS is supported by Michelin, Snap-On, PanGlobal and Adobe.
