Johor, MALAYSIA, May 17th, 2001

A record number of 26 entries from 9 different countries have been received for the Asian Formula 2000 (AF2000) races to be held this weekend at the Johor Circuit, Pasir Gudang in conjunction with the Asian Festival of Speed (AFOS).

Leading the AF2000 championship is Karun Chandhok from India while trailing closely behind is fellow countryman, Asif Nazir and Singaporean Denis Lian. Despite his first outing on this circuit, Karun is already on the pace of last year's pole position time set by P. Sureshwaren.

"I expect Denis and Asif to be my main rivals again. Apart from them, I know I cannot discount Meckel Ali who has done a lot of testing here." replied Karun when ask about his preparation for the event.

Meckel, who is run by Malaysian Team Meritus, is looking forward to making up for the points he lost in Subic last month. In addition, other drivers like Japanese Tohru Jitsukawa, Nick Thomas and Kaushek Haritha are expected to raise their game to earn more championship points.

The AF2000 participants' response received for Rd. 3 & 4 at the challenging 3.8km circuit is a strong indication of another action filled weekend for the spectators.

Meanwhile, Team Petronas Primax is busy preparing their Civic which is to be driven by local rising star, Mohammed Fariqe Hairuman who is participating in the Asian Touring Car Championship (ATCC.

With a qualified field of 18 cars on the grid, the ATCC races this weekend will be a perfect training ground for the Petronas Primax driver as he pits his skill against the leading drivers from all over the Asian continent.

AFOS will also feature the popular Porsche Asian Challenge (PAC) which will see two Malaysian drivers, Key Soon Yue and Rosedin Din in their Porsche 993 RS and 911 RSR respectively.
