Darling Downs Pro Stock drag racers Tony Wedlock and Denis Whiting are bound to be among the front-runners during this weekends Tin Top Titles, featuring Top Doorslammer and Travelaire Tours Pro Stock at Ipswich's Willowbank Raceway.

The Toowoomba drivers currently sit first and third in the ANDRA Pro Stock Australian Championship and with just two rounds remaining in the National series and 105 points separating the duo, it's bound to make for some intense racing over the quarter mile.

While there's a great respect for each others talents, it'll count for little as Wedlock looks to secure his first Australian Championship in a career already spanning two decades.

"It's been a good year for both of us and such has been the closeness of this year's series everyone knows they have to turn up ready to race or they could end up falling by the wayside," said Wedlock who has won all three rounds so far this season.

"I've been up against Denis twice this year and have been fortunate enough to come away victorious on both occasions.

"We contested the final in Sydney earlier this year and also matched up in a semi-final recently.

"I'm awaiting a couple of parts that are being shipped over from the States but we should have the Ultimate Financial Services Pontiac ready to go by Wednesday and be firing on all cylinders come qualifying on Saturday."

The importance of the Tin Top Titles is that it serves as the major preliminary meeting in the lead up to Australia's biggest drag racing event, the Willowbank Winternationals on June 11-13.

The 2003/04 season finale is shaping as the best ever and will bring together all six professional brackets as well as a full support program headlined by Queensland's Supercharged Outlaws.

"It wouldn't surprise me to see some quicker times recorded this weekend as the weather is starting to cool down making for idyllic drag racing conditions.

"Following the million dollar improvements that were undertaken last year the concrete to half track mark is going to be significantly quicker and that'll ensure some outstanding performances.

"I'm anticipating that records in all brackets could be hammered during the Winternationals."

The Ipswich City Council is fully committed to motorsport in the region and is an active member of the Carnival of Horsepower promotion that seeks to encourage the general public to attend three major events on the Ipswich sporting calendar.

The Willowbank Raceway Winternationals will be held on June 11-13, the Ipswich Turf Club will host the Ipswich Cup on June 19 while V8 Supercars are featured during the 6th round of the Australian V8 Supercar Championship series at Queensland Raceway on July 2-4.
