Christopher Guerrieri takes next step up ladder
2003 Canadian Formula Ford Champion Moves to Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship
TORONTO - May 10, 2004 - After claiming top honours in the 2003 Canadian Formula Ford Championship, Pickering, Ontario native Christopher Guerrieri will now move up the racing ladder by competing in this year's Formula Ford Zetec Championship. Guerrieri joins JDC Motorsports of Minnesota, who are second in the Championship standings after three race weekends.
"I'm getting a bit of a late start with JDC Motorsports," says Guerrieri, "it was a bit of a struggle to put a program together given the challenges that open-wheel racing were faced with in the off-season. But JDC team owner John Church decided to give me a chance to race with his organization and I am very excited to see how I can do in a more powerful car and on wings and slicks. I've missed a few races but I'm going to do everything I can to make up for lost time. My goal is to learn from the team and do the best I can."
Guerrieri won the 2003 Canadian Formula Ford Championship with 123 points and earned the coveted Ford Driver of the Year title, but the college student made national headlines not only for his outstanding performance on the racetrack, which saw him post seven top-five finishes, three race wins, two pole positions and two fastest race laps; but also for his distinctive sponsorship program which was headlined by title sponsor the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaelcologists of Canada (SOGC).
Guerrieri, who remains the national spokesperson for the SOGC's Contraception Awareness Program in 2004, will continue to encourage young Canadians to visit the organization's public information site, www.sexualityandu.ca as part of his agreement with the organization.
Guerrieri's first race with JDC Motorsports will take place on Victoria Day weekend, at Mosport International Raceway, the only Canadian stop on the Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship.
"I am happy that my first race will be on home turf," says Guerrieri. "I wish we had a chance to race more in Canada, but unfortunately that's just the state of open-wheel racing in this country. Besides regional racing and the Molson Indy events, there is no professional open-wheel development series in Canada for a Canadian driver to move into."
"I think the only reason that I am fortunate enough to continue racing is because we have developed a marketing program that leverages our sponsors money in Canada. We take our sponsors to places they want to be, teen events, sporting events, concerts, here in this country even when I'm racing elsewhere. It's a system that makes everybody happy and keeps me behind the wheel. Canadian drivers have to be innovative if they want to race professionally."
Guerrieri will have his first opportunity to test the 2-litre car during an open test at Mosport just prior to the Victoria Day weekend. For additional information on Guerrieri please visit www.chrisguerrieri.com.
