HOUSTON (Seabrook)....The Houston Automotive Modelers Society (HAMS) expects over 350 entrants during the 10th annual Texas Shootout Model Car Contest on June 10. The Bay Area Community Center on Nasa Road One in Seabrook, will be jam-packed with model cars, vendors and products displays. Ferrari of Houston, Lone Star Bank and HavCam Digital Productions are once again sponsoring this rapidly growing competition.

Model car building showcases every aspect of the automobile: including racecars, such as pro street, low\riders, funny cars and dragsters, antiques, custom trucks, emergency vehicles and motorcycles.

The HAMS members meet monthly and the group participates in many contests plus man the model contest at the annual Autorama World of Wheels. One of the HAMS members, fifteen-year-old Austin Havican, is considered to be one of the best young modelers in Texas, and recently book Best of Show/Junior honors at a competition in Birmingham. Austin will compete in the Texas Shootout along with many of his peers. Model car building enthusiasts are a diverse group -- all ages, all walks of life, but with a common passion -- model cars.

\There are over 29 contest categories. Specialty awards will include best of show, best theme, best paint, the featured marque, people's choice, chairman's choice, best interior and best engine.

The theme for the 2000 Texas Shootout Model Car Contest is the Hall of Fame Cars. The featured marque is the Volkswagen.

Doors open to the public on Saturday, June 10 at 9:30am. The awards ceremony begins at
4pm. General admission is only $1.00 per person.

The Texas Shootout has gained a national reputation for drawing high-quality model car entries along with many of the nation's best modelers. As a result of its reputation, Pat Covert, a nationally renowned author and columnist for the Scale Auto Enthusiast Magazine will visit with the attendees and provide coverage of this event in the publication. Covert will conduct a Modeling Roundtable and a question and answer session for attendees and model builders.

Editor of the popular Model Cars Magazine, Gregg Hutchings, will be on site also. Hutchings will bring with him hats, t-shirts and drawings by the famed model car artist Jairus Watson.

Scale Motorsports expert, Matthew Wells, will conduct a modeling seminar providing information on decaling and using aftermarket parts.

Model car building interest among adults has increased substantially over the past few years, forcing manufacturers to release long out-of-production items.

The Texas Shootout will feature models built straight from the box to intricate miniatures crafted exclusively of hand-formed parts. Wild customs, commercial rigs, racing cars, fantasy and prototype vehicles will also be on display during the one-day show.

There are 29 contest categories and 10 specialty awards. The doors open at 9:30am on Saturday, June 10. The awards presentation begins at 4pm. General admission is only $1.00. Proceeds from the event benefit the Eliot Elementary HOSTS (Help our Students to Succeed) Program.
