INGO IS THE LATEST WINNER AT THE SUDAM SUPERTOURING
Curitiba (23/08/98) - Brazilian Ingo Hoffmann secured his first win at the South-American Touring Car Championship today, at the Pinhais Circuit, in this city, after starting the seventh round of the championship from pole position. The Brazilian needed 41:0.4174, a new record for the race distance of 28 laps or 104.076 km. Behind his BMW 320i finished the two Alfa Romeo 155 of Cocho Lopez and, 8/10 of a second later, Emiliano Spataro. The championship resumes on September 6th at Oberá, Argentina.
The two top contenders of the S-ATCC - Argentinas Oscar Larrauri (Hoffmanns team mate at the Pro.As Mastercard team), and Brazils Cacá Bueno (Team Brahma/Essos Peugeot 406), -, faced problems at the start and had to start from the back of the grid. If Larrauri managed to finished eight, behind rookie Flavio Trindade (BMW 320i), Bueno had to stop after five laps due to damages on his Peugeot 406 radiator in a collision with Pablo Peóns Chrysler Stratus. As far as the championship is concerned, Larrauri now leads with 83 points, only one ahead of Bueno. Apart of this battle, Lopez and Fangio II - who finished fifth today -, are now involved in a war for the third place with the Alfa Romeo driver totalling 67 points, six more than the Peugeot pilot.
Ingo Hoffmann first win at the South-American Touring Championship had a special meaning for the ex-Fittipaldi F1 driver, nowadays a major name in his native Brazil, where he has won ten national Stock Car titles. Hoffmann has improved his performances since he joined the Pro.As/Mastercard operation earlier this year.
This first victory is very important for me and I must thank my team for providing me with a winning car. I managed to do a good start and stay ahead of Cocho Lopez. Once I build up a safety margin it was a matter of consolidating this advantage up to the chequered flag.
If Ingo crossed the finish line some 13897 ahead of Lopez, between the later and fifth place Juan Manuel Fangio II the gap was less than 13/10, reflecting the competitiveness of the series. Fangio II - who had spent most of 90s driving IMSA and F-Cart machinery -, once again showed progress with front wheel drive cars by scoring the race fastest lap by clocking 126683 on the third lap.
