Daytona ARL and DAARA Weekend

SUNDAY, MAY 17, 1998 Members of The Auto Racing Legends and The Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association got together today at Go-Kart City for a fun filled day of go-kart racing. The event was sponsored by Edmunds Photos, Plaques & Trophies in Daytona Beach. Well over 100 members and friends turned out for the event and over 50 actually racing the go-karts. The afternoon started out with five heat races and three consolation races. The clubs also ran a special "Over The Hill" race for our senior legends which was won by Jim "Pappy" Wollman with Ed Briganti taking a close second. The day ended with a 15 lap feature event won by ARL member and local race driver Ray Grimard. The races were announced by ARL member Randy Pepper and veteran starter and ARL Vice President Ken Golden flagged the event. The day was topped off with a number of door prizes being given away including an autographed t-shirt donated by Smokey Yunick, a Dale Earnhart banner, and tickets to Mark Martin's Klassix Auto Museum and Daytona USA as well as a cash prize to the winner of the 50/50. Funds raised at this event will benefit The ARL Racing for Education Program which encourages youngsters in the Volusia County Schools to stay in school and complete their education. To the delight of all present, the clubs also set up a display of new and vintage race cars which included Curtis "Crawfish" Crider's 1940 beach racer, a 1957 Ford stock car from Speedway Auto Parts, the X-1R sponsored modified owned by Chris Fornili and Tracy Groves, a beautiful restored midget racer belonging to Sam Packard, Dick Gile's 1937 Ford modified, Jim Wollman's "Shade Tree Special" vintage midget, and a go-kart. This was a terrific day for all who attended.
