DTC: Faraas to drive Megane in 2001

Siffert, Ickx and Westwood were among drivers under consideration for the second car High Class Racing. The Renault Motorsport Danmark team has now finalized a deal with the young Norwegian talent, Thomas Faraas, who tested for the team at Ring Djursland in February. With Faraas in place the selection of the driver for the second Megane Stationcar now enters its final phases.

"I'm very happy that Thomas is going to drive for us. Thomas is good, actually he is really good, and I think that he is going to be a very good driver," team manager Ole Ingemann says.

Thomas went very well, when he tested for us at Ring Djursland. He came directly from a Peugeot test in England, so we were very excited to learn of his first impressions of the Renault. He is a bit of an unknown quantity, but he has got the backing of Harald Hellum, which is Norway's talent spotter number one par excellence. I believe in Thomas, as he has an open mind to new things, and then he has proved that he could win in Germany."

21-year old Thomas Faras comes from Hakadal near Oslo, and he has been described as one of his country's most promising drivers. Late last year he was thus given Racing Prisen from NBF, Norway's motorsporting authority, which was done on the basis of his performance in the German ADAC VW New Beetle Cup, where he won a round at Nurburgring. But before embarking on international racing, Faraas raced with success in Norway, starting with karts and Formula Ford. Following a fourth place in 1998 he took the runner-up spot in 1999 behind veteran Sten Erik Nilsen in the Chrysler Neon Cup, while he has also taken part in the domestic Nissan Almera Rally Cup.

With the young Norwegian signed High Class Racing is now working to find the second driver for the Renault Megane line-up.

"The identity of the second driver is still not final," Ole Ingemann admits. "We have several options and are in a position, where we can select the drivers, but we of course have to show consideration for our backers, so it is a bit of a puzzle."

"It is no secret that Swiss driver Phillippe Siffert is in the frame for that drive. Nor that Janina Ickx is, but she is more obvious as a guest driver, as she has a deal to run a Formula Ford in the States. Then there is Julian Westwood, who drove for us in the European Renault Spider Cup and took second overall despite not driving all rounds. These drivers are under consideration as is Danish driver Klaus Madsen, who raced for Team Brask last year," Ole Ingemann ends.
