James Thompson unharmed, but the racing car was a write off
James Thompson came of unharmed following an unplanned meeting with two rescue vehicles, while Hartmann Honda Racing has had to write of the car involved, when the most recent round of the Danish Touringcar Championship was staged at Ring Djursland.
"Drivers don't take care of each other and people believe that it is a banger race, where everything has to be decided within the first 25 % of the opening lap," team owner Hans Hartmann says.
"There were 22 laps ahead to sort out position, but of course there should be havoc in the first corner. Luckily, we did not lose a driver, but we lost one of our cars. That is the most positive about it."
James Thompson had taken an unchallenged win in the first of the two races at Ring Djursland, after which he had to start at the rear of the grid for the second race. After the start a couple of rivals tangled ahead of him, but when James Thompson tried to drive around them, he was hit by one of the cars, which sent him off the circuit.
"Off course it is a nasty accident, every motor racing accident is when something goes wrong, but what triggers the situation is the fact that some drivers to take care of the other drivers," Hans Hartmann says. "We came back from the European Cup race in Austria without a single scratch, and when we race in Denmark, it is a banger race again. It just continues, as if there is no end to it, unfortunately."
Hartmann Honda Racing's second car was this time raced by Wolfgang Treml, who collected a fifth and a third in the two races.
"Wolfgang did a sensible job," Hans Hartmann says. "You have to remember that Wolfgang only has driven in the Honda once before, and that was at a circuit, which he knew before, and of course he did not have any previous knowledge of Ring Djursland."
