The Danish Touringcar Challenge will really be living up to its "Pro-Am" nickname, when the first race of the new Danish racing success class will be run at the Jyllands-Ring on May 7th. It has been many years since the Danish racing public was presented with such a high quality field at the opening meeting of a new season, and this time all the international Pros are taking on the best "Amateurs" in the very same class! John Nielsen, Kurt Thiim, Thorkild Thyrring, Jason Watt, Kristian Kolby and Casper Elgaard will all be starting against the best local names headed by the trio of Jesper Sylvest, Michael Carlsen and Pierre Legarth, who took the top three positions in last year's championship. But at the first round the very strong DTC entry will be even stronger, as Panoz LMP driver, Jan Magnussen, will be making his debut, when he takes over the car of fellow-townsman, Johnny V. Nielsen. "Earlier in the year we had discussed, whether we should be sharing Johnny's Peugeot 306 during the season, but in the end we decided that I will race it in the opening round, when Johnny cannot be present due to a confirmation in his family," Magnussen explains. The former Grand Prix driver will not sample his race car before the series kicks off on May 7th, but he has already tried the new class. This happened when he helped out testing one of Team Brask Racing's identical Peugeot 306 GTIs at the two DTC test days at Ring Djursland and the Jyllands-Ring respectively. "The Peugeot will definitively be competitive, but it is hard to guess about the result of the race, as it is going to be really tough in the Danish Touringcar Challenge", Magnussenen admits. "I really enjoy to come back to Denmark to race and have some fun, but I don't have great expectations. The field also includes people like John Nielsen, but the worst thing about racing in Denmark is that the entry is filled with specialist who know the Jyllands-Ring. I have competed against many drivers, but I don't believe that I will be able to win against these specialists, who have done 700.000 laps or so of the track., which I last visited in 1991!" Back then Jan Magnussen made his Formula Ford debut with tenth place and the rest is now history, as they say. Now he will be making his first saloon car start since the now-defunct ITC-series in 1996, and his comeback will take place in a class for which he has great expectations. "I think that the Danish Touringcar Challenge will be a super class, and I have only heard good things about it," he explains. "There will be a lot of television and media coverage, and that will be good for the sport's position in Denmark. DTC is going to be a class with a great potential for teams and drivers financially, because it has become easier to find the budgets due to the television coverage. From a sporting viewpoint the class is also good, as there is not much difference between the cars. Some cars are of course better than others, but it won't end with a situation, where only one marque will dominate."
