It is going to be a close battle between Peugeot's Jan Magnussen and BMW's Casper Elgaard, when this year's Danish Touringcar Championship will be decided on Sunday afternoon at Jyllands-Ringen. Coming into the final round of Northern Europe's largest production-based saloon car series the former Stewart Grand Prix driver is leading Casper Elgaard by 20 points, but the latter set a lap time that in double terms was feverish. Despite suffering from a heavy flu the BMW driver was two tenths of a second quicker than Magnussen during qualifying, while team mate John Nielsen was third.

"If the distance between us at the top of the table had been a point or two, this might have helped me from a psychological point of view, but the actual difference is 20 points, and Jan almost has to retire for me to take the title," Casper Elgaard said after his fast lap.

"Luckily I set a fast lap right at the beginning, and I'm glad that I managed to do that, because then I felt some dizziness again. When I went out on the circuit, I knew it was important to use all my energy on one single lap, and I succeeded. It's nice to be fastest, and hopefully Jan is ruing the fact that he is now the meat in a BMW sandwich."

As soon as Casper Elgaard had vacated his red BMW, his helmet and balaclava were replaced by a woolen cap, covering both ears.

"Now I have to try and be in good health for tomorrow, and I hope that most of the flu has gone for tomorrow," Casper Elgaard said.

Normally Jan Magnussen is the master of the one-lap-wonders, but today he seemed satisfied by taking the runner-up spot for Sunday's Super Pole session that will decide the final outcome of the top 10 slots on the grid.

"After all, only a top 10 position was needed today, and my 1.13,7 lap was good enough for that. However, I didn't manage to get sufficient heat into my rear wheels, and it really is difficult for us to find the speed with 45 kilos of ballast in the car," the championship leader said.

During 2003 Magnussen's trade mark has been driving through the field in the final following a win in the pre-final, but this time the tactics are different.

"I stand a good chance of winning the title, and it is the championship that has top priority. If I can secure the title in the pre-final, I'll do that, but nothing silly will be attempted, as everything can happen. I think that Casper will fight right through till the end, and I might also be unlucky and retire," the Peugeot driver said.
