Debutant Seat driver causes surprise in DTC practice
Edman, Magnussen and Watt took the first three grid positions for Peugeot

Peugeot Statoil Motorsport was dominant in Saturday's practice and Super Pole session for round two of the Danish Touringcar Championship at Mantorp Park. Local man Jens Edman used his circuit experience to claim pole position, while team mates Jan Magnussen and Jason Watt took the next positions.

"Jan has not been driving much on this circuit before, but he is nevertheless very fast," Jens Edman said, when asked about his eventual advantage of racing at his home circuit.

"As all three of us drive the same car, Mantorp Park seems to be a circuit well-suited for the Peugeots. Of course I have an advantage of having driven here before, so that I know the curcuit, but as Jan and Jason get closer and closer all the time, I just wish that this weekend will be over very soon and hopefully before they have learnt much more!"

Jan Magnussen had been fastest during the timed practice, but he was beaten by a mere 0.15 second in the Super Pole session

"It's probably my own fault, because I tried to drive too hard," Jan Magnussen explained afterwards. "My lap was far from perfect. I made two minor mistake, but it is hard to say if I lost any time due to this. Circuit knowledge is very vital here, and I have tried to learn from Jens Edman, and I think I have gained some good ideas."

The surprise of the day, however, was caused by a newcomer to the series. Last year's Danish Group N Champion, Michel Nykjær, finally makes his DTC debut, but he caused a major shock by first qualifying for the Super Pole session and then taking sixth place on the grid.

"I really didn't expect to get sixth place on the grid, even though you always hope for the best," the Seat driver said. "We only got the car on Friday morning, where I saw it for the first time. I had to get used to the car, but I'm very glad for this result, which was completely unexpected."

"The car works quite fine for the moment. We had some problems with the suspension set-up, but that were the usual new-car problems, which we have tried to solve as good as possible. But we need to change more things for the next round of the series," said Nykjær, who will be starting from the best ever grid position for a Seat in the Danish Touringcar Championship.

"I will be sixth on the grid, but my strategy is just to go pedal to the metal tomorrow, and then we will se, how things will develop," Michel Nykjær said. "It is always difficult with a new car and the circuit is longer than what we are used to in Denmark, so it's going to be a touch race tomorrow."
