Following practice for round six of this year's Danish Touringcar Championship the battle between the two championship candidates Jan Magnussen and Casper Elgaard is as intense as ever. Since the start of the season the Peugeot driver and the BMW driver have topped the points table, and on Saturday they also headed the time sheets at Ring Djursland, being separated by a mere 0.06 second.
Surprise of the day, however, was Philip Andersen. The former double Formula Renault champion has had a very disappointing entry to the Danish Touringcar Championship with numerous crashes and few results, but at Ring Djursland he surprised everybody by posting third-fastest time.
"The change has been caused by Jan Larsen, who is a mental trainer and sports coach," Philip Andersen explained on his sudden transition.
"I've put the previous races behind me and mentally I behave as if the season hasn't started until now and that this is the first meeting, I will be racing this year. Now, I've got the will to race again, which I had actually lost. I wasn't really aware of it, but when we started digging into it, I found out. I didn't really believe in myself anymore, and I didn't have the desire to compete. This desire has now returned, but there is still more to do."
During free practice the young Honda driver gave a small hint at his improvement in form, posting ninth quickest time.
"The only explanation is that I've discussed things with my mental trainer and started focussing on what I can do better. Instead of focussing on the negative aspects, I've focussed on things to improve," Philip Andersen said.
While the Honda driver was in a mentally strong position before today's timed practice, the opposite was the case for Jakob Sund. In the morning the engine of his Toyota Corolla broke, and even though the mechanics worked hard to change it quickly, he didn't return to the circuit until there were only seven minutes left of the session.
"It's obvious that you can fell it mentally, if you only have five minutes to post a quick time," Jakob Sund admits, having taken a lowly 21st position among the 24 contestants.
"We did manage to get the engine running, but it is far from perfect. We had a misfire which prevented me from setting a quick lap, but the most important thing is that we made the car work again, then the position is secondary."
