James Thompson aims for victory at Danish GP Meeting
His own racing car is in far from mint condition following his dramatic exit at the previous DTC round at Ring Djursland, but James Thompson is fit for fight and ready to start in the coming weekend's races at Jyllandsringen, where not only points for the Danish Touringcar Championship is at stakes, but also for the new Scandinavian Touring Car Cup. The quick Brit will start in a different car, however.
"For the third week in a row James's own chassis is undergoing a rebuild as it was heavily damaged, so instead we place in the car that Wolfgang Treml drove," team owner Hans Hartmann says. "Of course it is a pity for Wolfgang, who did a sterling job, but unfortunately we do not have other options in this situation."
While the racing car was damaged extensively, James Thompson was unharmed in the violent crash.
"I have spoken with James, and the episode at Ring Djursland doesn't affect him at all. He is ready. He says that he is going to beat the other drivers," Hans Hartmann says."The car that he will be racing is no average machine. When we raced in the ETCC in Austria, Wolfgang actually managed to reach a higher top speed in that car than James did in his own!"
Nevertheless the chassis change will lead to challenges for James Thompson and Hartmann Honda Racing.
"The challenge is that the car originally was a little bit heavier, but we have worked on that. The only real difference is that the car is older, because the specs are identical," Hans Hartmann says. "It might be that it just is the impression of the car being older that makes a mental difference. The engines in both our cars are fully updated, and Per Poulsen did drive the car last year and he did well. The only change that we will be making is to move the special gear-lever that we have made for James, but that is a minor detail."
"One thing is sure, however. We won't be going to the Grand Prix meeting to finish second. James was the driver who recorded a new lap record at Ring Djursland. We are ready, the base weight is good and we will go for it. Even though James posted a new lap record at Ring Djursland, he did not use that many tyres, so we have a good reserve to use from. For sure, we want to finish at the top."
