The World Motor Sport Council, in the meeting held at Seville yesterday, voted to raise the European Super Touring Cup to the rank of FIA European Touring Car Championship. This decision has been taken under reserve of the approval of the series' Sporting and Technical Regulations, while on the Council's next meeting, in December.

Even if expected, the news has been received with great satisfaction by International Sport Communication, organizer of the Euro STC. The series was established only eight months ago, in February, when ISC took over the German ADAC in order to relaunch Touring Car competitions in Europe. This move saved hundreds of jobs and proved that it was possible to organize a high profile international series at low costs, counting on the many Super Touring cars exsisting in Europe, with no need to invent anything new. That resulted in a series of spectacular races, that attracted a great number of TV viewers and relightened the car manufacturers' interest in Touring Cars. Through the World Motor Sport Council's decision, the FIA has recognized and rewarded the ISC's efforts right at the eve of the meeting that will crown the first Euro STC champion.

TEN MEETINGS IN AS MANY COUNTRIES

The new championship, named FIA European Super Touring Championship, will be part of the Eurosport Super Racing Weekends, sharing the role of main event with the FIA GT Championship. The calendar, approved yesterday by the World Motor Sport Council, counts ten race meetings in as many European countries and was accurately studied, even hanging on bank holidays, to reduce clashes with F1 GPs.

THE EUROPEAN TC CHAMPIONSHIP IS BACK AFTER 13 YEARS

The FIA European Super Touring Championship will fill a gap in the international calendar that lasted for 13 years. The latest edition of the European Touring Car Championship was held in 1988 and crowned Italian tin-top ace Roberto Ravaglia at the wheel of his BMW M3. Since then, Touring Car racing was confined within the national borders, with the three outstanding exceptions of the FIA World Cup: at Monza in 1993, Donington Park in 1994 and Le Castellet in 1995.
