Formula Ford Championship leader Robert Wolk (AfintaPart Mygale) will be looking to put his poor performances of the last round behind him at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria this weekend (27 August) in round seven of the Vodacom Power Tour.
The 20-year old Wolk went into the East London round of the series last month with a comfortable lead in the points table, and high hopes of winning in front of his home crowd, but things went awry when he crashed out of both races.
With second placed Stevie Morris having withdrawn from the series prior to the East London round, Wolk nevertheless extended his series lead by one point for qualifying in pole position.
Having won both races at the Zwartkops round last season, Wolk will be looking to get back to his usual winning ways and, with Morris not racing, is bound to extend his series lead still further. He currently holds a 27-point lead after seven wins in the 12 races contested.
Wolk's misfortune last time out left 17-year old Donovan Howard to take victory for the day. Howard (Associated Auto / Wap Alto Mygale) did not win either of the day's two races, but second place finishes in both races were enough to give him his first overall win in the category, and move him into third place in the championship.
Howard has shown tremendous improvement over the past two seasons, but although he was the overall victor in East London, he will be determined to cross the line first this weekend. He finished third in both races last season, thus he should be in the thick of the battle at the head of the field this time around.
David Veringa (Sabat Batteries / Playstation 2 Van Diemen), last season's championship runner-up finally scored his first win of the season in race one in the last round, but he clashed with Wolk at the first corner of race two, eliminating both drivers. The non-finish saw him drop behind Howard in the series points. He put in strong performances at Zwartkops last season after having to start at the back of the grid, so he should also be in the mix at the sharp end of the field.
Armani Jamrozinski (Diesel / Pilot Freight Van Diemen) also scored his first win of the year at East London, taking victory in the second race of the day. The 18-year old also finished second in race one, but was excluded for not stopping in parc ferme after the race, highlighting his competitiveness.
He has not contested the whole season and holds sixth place in the standings, but his mission is to win as many races as possible for the remainder of the year, and he is very capable of doing just that.
A driver worth watching is 23-year old Martin Robinson (HydroMobile Mygale). He battles with consistency, but always goes well at the Zwartkops circuit. Two second places last season attest to that, and the former race winner will want a good result to improve on his joint seventh place in the points.
Young Jayde Kruger (Wap Alto Mygale) has also impressed this season, despite a lack of consistency. The 16-year old has got the pace to run at the front, as his hard fought third place with the leading duo in the second race East London race proved. He lies fifth in the standings and could have been a whole lot higher up had he not been involved in a few incidents during the year, but he is still young and that is what learning the trade is all about. He is a potential race winner!
Others to watch will be Marc Murray (Rotax Max Challenge Van Diemen) and Craig Allan (City Lodge/Audio Dynamics Van Diemen). Murray scored two fourths in East London, and with Zwartkops being his home circuit he should do well, while Allan has shown flashes of race winning speed during the year.
Ford's development driver Jennifer Murray (Ford Credit/Ford Racing Van Diemen) will not be on the grid, as she will be competing in an event abroad. She will be representing South Africa in the Formula Woman Nations Cup at the Rockingham Motor Speedway in the UK. Sixteen women racing drivers from around the world will compete in a fleet of new 2005 Caterham 7 racecars. Formula Woman is about increasing female participation in motorsport and will be broadcast in 26 countries. <pre> Championship points after round 6: 1) Robert Wolk 97 2) Steven Morris 70 3) Donovan Howard 54 4) David Veringa 51 5) Jayde Kruger 43 6) Armani Jamrozinski 37
