Broad gets on the Podium at Snetterton

Bedford's Phil Broad was again competing in the Michelin Ginetta G50 Cup races, on the BTCC support bill, at the Norfolk circuit of Snetterton. Having had to miss the last round due to his conflicting WTCC/F2 commitments as an engineer, Broad was keen to finally unlock his potential in the Ginetta G50.

After a final test day on the Friday is was a mixed day with good times on used tyres in the morning but without the same balance with new tyres in the afternoon. After discussing his options with his Team Century Motorsport (the boss Nathan Freke had won this championship in 2009) he went for a revised setup ready for Saturday qualifying.

After some overnight rain the circuit had quickly dried out and so all the Ginetta G50 drivers were out on slick tyres looking to get a good time during their 20 session. Broad ran some good laps and finished up much further up on the grid and only 0.3 seconds off pole position.

After the session Broad was very happy and said "I have finally got the car setup so I can get the maximum out of it and really happy with 5th place and looking forward to a strong race"

In the meeting the Ginetta G50's would be racing twice on Saturday and once on Sunday.

The first Saturday race was held just after lunch in dry and pleasant conditions and Broad made a good getaway off the line and made up a place by the 1st corner and was tracking the leading 4 racers around the circuit. After a heavy shunt between Guest driver Adrian Newey (Red Bull Racing's F1 Technical Director) and Julain Draper the safety car was called out.

After the safety car was withdrawn the racing re-commenced and Broad took his opportunity to overtake Mark Davies into third and a podium place. Broad then closely tracked the two leaders Breeze & Wrathall (who are 1st & 2nd in the championship) up to the flag waiting for a clean opportunity to pass, but only trailed the winner by 0.8 seconds at the chequered flag.

After being presented with his 3rd place trophy on the podium Broad said "A fantastic result not only for me but also Century Motorsport, who have worked tirelessly at sorting out the reliability issues and finding a set up that works for me".

This result meant that Broad started in 3rd place on the grid for Race 2. With a change of conditions to a wet but drying track Broad didn't manage to hold his position but after a few laps of jockeying for position Broad was in a strong 5th place before a technical issue meant his engine was started of fuel and so he had to park it at the side of the track.

In Race 3 his luck was again not with him as a strong clash with Alice Powell meant he had to retire with a damaged car.

At the end of the weekend Broad was a bit deflated but pleased that he had been on the Podium for the 1st time this season "Race's 2 & 3 were less successful but having turned the corner, I hope to build upon this weekend with further good results at my two remaining outings in the Ginetta at Silverstone and Brands Hatch. I would like to say a big thank you to all my sponsors and family in providing much appreciated support this year."

The next races for Broad and the Ginetta G50's are on the Silverstone National circuit on 21st & 22nd August
