Ginetta Challenge set for Donington showdown

The Ginetta Challenge is set for a thrilling climax at Donington Park this weekend with three drivers in contention for the crown.

After a season of all-action racing, George Murrells heads the title race with 372 points having taken five race wins over the course of the season. George's main opposition is Andy Richardson who bagged three wins early-season at Pembrey and who is just 28 points back. The third driver with a shot at the title is Sean Huyton, the Ormskirk racer 38 points shy of Murrells but with the speed and racecraft to reduce that deficit.

It won't be easy for either Richardson or Huyton to overcome Murrells' advantage, as George has looked fast and reliable in recent rounds. He stormed back to catch and pass Huyton at Silverstone, and although he didn't win at Brands Hatch last time out, he fought up the order in both races to prove his ability. He starts in the box seat and with points available for pole position and the fastest lap, as well as race wins, he aims to secure the championship at the Donington double.

Richardson and Huyton have both been winners this season and hence will know that they need to be so again to try to stop Murrells from raising the champion's trophy. Huyton is the man in form having won both Brands Hatch races last month to add to his Rockingham triumph in July.

But away from the championship fight, there will be some great race action on a circuit that lends itself to overtaking. Stuart Pearson has been a regular podium finisher this year but not yet a winner -- he will be aiming for his first victory at Donington, while Matt Flowers, Tom Mallett and Harry Whale have all enjoyed increasing speed over the course of the season. Newly-crowned Junior champion Tom Ingram makes his Ginetta Challenge debut and will be another driver well worth watching in a G40.

G40? Yes. New for 2010 is the inclusion of the Ginetta G40 and earlier G20 Junior models which have added variety to the grid. Dominic Pettit won at Rockingham in a G40 and then triumphed at Snetterton in a G20 Junior. The G40s are set to run to 2011-specification this weekend with slick tyres and are likely to be at the head of the field, clear of the championship machinations.

There are just two races to go and it's all to play for -- may the best man win!
