DAVE CAMARA TAKES HIS SECOND CHECKERED FLAG AT GRANBY
GRANBY, Que., June 21 1998 -- American driver Dave Camara took his second consecutive win at Autodrome Granby, last Friday night, in the modified feature. It is without a doubt the excellent performance of Mike Woodring of the Empire Super Sprints that has retained the attention of the fans gathered at Granby for this TVA and Cage aux Sports night.
For their first of two visits this season at this Eastern Townships speedplant, Woodring was the favourite due to his past successes on this track, but also for his performances since the beginning of the season. The Empire Super Sprints defending champion didn't disappoint his fans with a spectacular victory on Dan Kaszubinski who had led this 20-lap feature most of the time.
Twelfth at the drop of the green flag, Woodring made his way through the field to find himself behind the leader on lap 7. Immediately he showed Kaszubinski that he was just behind him to put a little more pressure. On the very last lap, with a spectacular manoeuvre by the outside, Woodring took the lead to deprive Kaszubinski of a first victory this season. Bobby Podolak finished third.
For Woodring, it was his fourth win at Granby in seven starts and a fifth victory this season in eight races.
Good impression
In the 25-lap feature for the modified division, young Steve Poirier continued to make a good impression with a second place finish, just behind American driver Dave Camara.
Restarts were painfull for many leaders as four yellows were signified to the drivers. It's on those restarts that the leaders lost their advantage.
At the green flag, Dominic Dufault took the early lead. On lap 5, after the first yellow flag, Marco Potvin from Sorel was able to take over Dufault. On the next lap, after a start in the tenth spot, Camara was already just behind and challenging Potvin. Despite two more restarts, Camara wasn't able to catch Potvin and it's only on lap 17 that he achieved his goal.
On the eleventh row at the beginning, Poirier found himself just behind Camara when he overtook Potvin. Poirier tried without success to overtake Camara. Marco Potvin was the third driver to cross the finish line.
Earlier in the evening, Dominic Dufault and Dave Camara were the winners in their respective heats.
David lucky
Robin David, a veteran driver in the sportsman class, made the crowd worried in the early stage of this 20-lap feature. On lap 4, his car made at least three rollovers on the back straigthaway to wind up on the top. After a few minutes, David was able to get out of the car without any harm but the car was badly damaged.
This race was the affair of Eric Sundborg. He had the best on Mario Clair and Mario Gigere. As for Gerry Patenaude, the defending champion, he had his share of problems and couldn't do better than a thirteenth place finish.
Stephane Messier registered his second win of the season in the late models division by having the best on Daniel Belanger and Stephane Messier while in the tourism class, Benoit Berube did the same thing in front of Andre Bienvenue, the heat winner, and Andre Gauthier, the sole driver of a pick-up truck at Autodrome Granby.
Next Friday night, promoter Bob Gatien will present the rescheduled Defi-Vision, that spectacular event involving blind drivers to the profits of the Mira Foundation who trains dogs for blind persons. Stars from the medias and television will also take part in that race as navigators. As always, it will be a spectacular event not to be missed. Also there will be a regular program involving the four regular classes at Granby. It will also be a Syracuse qualifier for 358 modified drivers.
