NICK WITTMER WINS HIS SECOND CONSECUTIVE GRAND PRIX OF TROIS-RIVIÈRES
Trois-Rivières, QC, August 7, 2005 - Nick Wittmer, of Hudson (QC), won his second consecutive Grand Prix of Trois-Rivières race in Round 5 of the Honda/Michelin Challenge Series event held Sunday in Trois-Rivières. With the win, the Honda de Sigi AutoSport driver became the first repeat winner in 2005. The victory also propelled him into first place in the provisional standings. Frédérick Lelièvre of Mont-Joli (QC) finished second ahead of Kuno Wittmer, Didier Schraenen of Mont Saint-Hilaire (QC), and Sylvain Ouellet of Louiseville (QC). Top rookie in the Trois-Rivières race was Matt Champagne of Fonthill (ON) who finished sixth overall, followed by Jacques Lelièvre, the father of second-place finisher Frédérick Lelièvre.
Starting third, Nick Wittmer passed Frédérick Lelièvre in turn one for second place and set off to catch his brother Kuno who had won the pole on Saturday. The brothers exchanged the lead, but it was eventually Nick who sailed away to score his third career win when Kuno hit the wall on lap 7 of the 20-lap race. After the hit, Kuno fell to sixth place before staging a comeback that netted him his second podium of the season.
''My car was perfect,'' Nick Wittmer said. ''I was able to pull away from Steven Laporte after I made a small driving error in the early part of the race. I finally passed my brother for the lead and he immediately tried to get it back, but he made contact with the wall. I was then able to extend the gap to win the race.''
''My brother and I had a great battle,'' Kuno Wittmer said. ''Unfortunately, I made contact with the wall, but I was already spinning my front wheels backward so that I would not lose too many positions. I quickly picked-up two positions before setting my sights on Laporte (who was third). I was all over his mirrors and he lost it when he contacted the wall.''
Frédérick Lelièvre, who shared the front row with Kuno Wittmer, lost two places at the start of the race behind Steven Laporte and the Wittmer brothers. He then moved into third place when Kuno made his mistake and then passed Laporte with two laps to go.
''I wasted too much time behind Laporte,'' Lelièvre said. ''By then, it was too late to catch Nick (Wittmer) with only two laps to go.'' In the provisional standings, Nick Wittmer moved into first place with 150 points. Steven Laporte, who finished 13th, is second in the standings with 143 points, three more than Didier Schraenen. Kuno Wittmer hangs on to fourth with 138 points. Alex Penfold, of Georgetown ON, is fifth with 127 points, tied with Frédérick Lelièvre.
Round Six of the Honda/Michelin Series will be held August 28 during the Molson Indy Montreal race weekend on Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve.
