The Honda Insight, America's first gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle, will be the official pace car for this year's Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) American Tour de Sol road rally. The rally pits the country's cleanest-running, most fuel-efficient cars, trucks and buses in a 250-mile event from New York City to Washington, D.C. during Clean Air Week, May 12-18.

"Honda's participation is a true turning point for the Tour de Sol," said American Honda$B!G(Bs Robert Bienenfeld, manager of alternative fuel vehicles sales and marketing. "For the first time in its 12-year history, the Tour will be led by an environmentally-friendly car -- the Insight -- that is now available at any local Honda dealership and that delivers the performance, reliability, quality and value that American consumers expect."

"The Honda Insight represents a superb application of advanced environmental technologies for everyday driving, and we are happy to see it lead the 2000 NESEA American Tour de Sol," said Nancy Hazard, NESEA associate director.

In addition to the Insight pace car, a dozen owner-driven Insights are participating. They will compete against a field of 50 prototype or concept alternative-fuel vehicles built by manufacturers and students.

Along this year's Tour de Sol route, special festivals will be held in Trenton, N.J., Cecil County, Md., Annapolis, Md. and Washington, D.C., where the finish-line ceremony will take place May 18 on the National Mall in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol.

NESEA is the nation's leading regional association involved in promoting awareness, understanding and development of non-polluting, renewable technologies. More information on NESEA and the Tour de Sol can be found on the Internet at www.nesea.org.
