Irwindale, Calif. - - The lovely Bruce Flanders, the beguiling baritone "Voice of Irwindale Speedway" has been named Grand Marshall of the Riverside East Rotary's "Show and Go 2000" car show and street race for charity. The event is set to be held on October 7 and 8, a will feature a spectacular downtown Riverside car show on Saturday followed on Sunday by hot 1/8-mile drag races out at the Riverside Airport.

"Being named Grand Marshall is quite an honor, I think that I get preferred parking and invited to lunch or something with all the VIPs," said Flanders, who's regular Saturday night job is keeping all the fans well informed and entertained from his perch in the announce booth at Irwindale Speedway.

"I still think that someone is going to put a mike in my hand and say, 'Hey Bruce, would you mind announcing while you're Grand Marshalling?' ... I won't have any problem with that at all," he smiled, answering his own theoretical question. "I make light of it, but this really is quite and honor that the Rotary has bestowed on us. The show organizers work very hard to make this a top notch charity event, I hope that everyone interested in cool cars will try to attend one or both days"

The car show (the seventh annual) portion of the event promises to be a good one with hundreds of hot and cool cars displayed right in the streets of downtown Riverside. The event will be Show & Shine style with plenty of neat trophies for the best cars, bikes, and trucks. Also on the Saturday agenda are: open-header cruising, city blocks of food and fun stuff vendors, DJ's, raffles, & a drawing for a 383 Chevy engine and tranny. Part car show, part street party and ALL fun. And the admission is FREE. Show times: 9 am -- 4:45 pm on Saturday, October 7.

On Sunday there'll be real drag racing at the Rialto Airport. All cars entered in the "Show" portion of the weekend are invited to "Go" on a specially-prepared section of the airport's runway that has been transformed into a 1/8-mile drag strip. "I'm especially intrigued by this part of the weekend, since at Irwindale, we just broke ground on our new Street Legal NHRA 1/8-mile Dragstrip," said Flanders. "This should be real fun to watch, who knows, maybe as Grand Marshall, they'll let me take my Toyota pickup down the strip for a quick run, I just put in new spark plugs last Fall," he said with a wink. The Drag Racing at Riverside Airport will run from 8 am -- 4 pm on Sunday, October 8.

Right in the middle of this special Riverside weekend, Flanders will make a quick dash about 30 miles West to be back on mike at Irwindale Speedway calling all the action for the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour racing event Saturday night. "I may bring along some of my 'fans' from the streets of Riverside, they'll be in for a treat at Irwindale, the "Tour" always means terrific racing action."

And so, we leave Bruce Flanders, we see him quietly contemplating how he'll "rule" during his two glorious days of Grand Marshalldom in downtown River City (... er, Riverside) on October 7 and 8. "... Maybe I'll ... No ... Perhaps I'll ... Well, I could ... Let's see, if I ..." (Join him on October 7 & 8 for the answer).
