Montreal, October 23, 2000 - The 10th annual Canadian Formula Ford Awards Banquet celebrated its champions and best performers at the Hotel Delta in Montreal, Saturday October 21.

New series' champion, 18-year old sensation Jonathan Macri of Gormley, Ontario, received the trophy awarded to the champion. Macri had a sensational season in 2000, winning four races - a feat that no driver had done since 1992 - and rewrote the record book by capturing six pole positions. Frederick Martel collected the trophy for second position in the final standings and his teammate Jean-Sebastien Bedard, the winner of two races this past season, accepted the third-place trophy.

The 2000 Sony Color Award, for the best looking car of the year, was awarded to two-time series' champion Didier Schraenen (in a CMV). The Cardinal Sportz Quartz Speed Award, presented to the driver who has accumulated the greatest number of fastest laps during the season, was presented to Jean-Sebastien Bedard.

Jonathan Macri, with six poles in eight races, collected the Hankook Fast Qualifier Award. He was also named the "Ford Driver of the Year". The 2000 Most Improved Driver Award, given to the driver whose average finishing position is most improved from last season, was given to Frederick Martel. Bedard returned to the podium to accept the Castrol Cup awarded to the driver who led the most laps over the course of the season. The Sunoco Diamond Award was shared by Jonathan Macri and Jean-Sebastien Bedard. The 2000 Crew Chief of the Year award was awarded to Keith Willis, Macri's crew chief. Finally, Ryan Horses, Whitby, Ont., collected the prestigious Ford Rookie of the Year award.

During the banquet, it was officially announced that Ford of Canada will continue to support the Canadian Formula Ford Championship next season. Exciting details about the 2001 championship, new sponsors and a schedule will be unveiled by the end of the year.

"It was a fantastic evening, congratulations to Jonathan Macri, and all the drivers for an excellent season," said Eric Berman, general manager of the series. "We've been hard at work on our plans for next year, and things are looking very positive for 2001. Stay tuned for some big announcements in the coming months.
